SUMMARY:The Art of Iceland: An Evening with Bruce McMillan
DESCRIPTION:In this special presentation co-hosted by the Brick Store Museum and the Art Guild of the Kennebunks\, artist Bruce McMillan will speak on Icelandic art and noted Icelandic artists. He will have on display original works from his collection of more than 50 Icelandic paintings and sculptures\, along with Iceland art books from his collection. \nThe Museum’s founder\, Edith Barry\, was a world traveler and part of her mission in creating the Museum was to bring the world to Kennebunk. \nBruce is a member of the Icelandic Watercolor Society. He had a two-person watercolor show in Reykjavik with his Icelandic watercolor friend\, Oskar Thorarensen\, Reykjavik and Beyond in 2022. His own honored 45 children’s books include seven set in Iceland\, two of them featuring paintings by Icelandic artist\, Gunnella\, their first one a NY Times Ten Best Illustrated Children’s Books of the year. He has photo-illustrated and written two books published in Iceland. Bruce has been traveling to and around Iceland for over thirty years. An incoming Iceland passport control officer said when inspecting his passport\, “Remember me?” And he did. \nBruce McMillan graduated from Kennebunk High School and the University of Maine. After a fortunate career in publishing\, producing 45 photo-illustrated children’s’ books\, two adult humor books in the US and two more books in Iceland\, Bruce moved on to painting watercolors for the past twelve years. Two of his watercolors are in the Brick Store Museum collection. \nThis presentation is free and open to the public\, and will take place in the Brick Store Museum’s Program Center at 4 Dane Street. SUMMARY:Copley Street | Concerts in West K with Mousam River Music
DESCRIPTION:The Museum’s Concert Partner Mousam River Music Presents: \nCopley Street – Joey Abarta\, Nathan Gourley\, and Owen Marshall – is a trio of some of the finest Irish musicians in the Northeast. Featuring Abarta on uilleann pipes (Irish bagpipes)\, Gourley on fiddle\, and Marshall on guitar and bouzouki\, they create a beautifully expressive and masterfully crafted sound. They have just released their second CD\, Copley Street 2\, which builds on the success of their acclaimed debut album. The three musicians weave together intricate tunes and instrumental textures in a rich tonal blend that shows the deep musical chemistry between them. \nAbarta has carved out a reputation as one of the finest pipers of his generation; he is an All-Ireland champion. In addition to his work with Copley Street he maintains an active schedule of teaching and performing. He has toured with the Green Fields of America troupe\, and performed for Irish President Michael D. Higgins.  He recently released his second solo album\, King of the Blind. \nGourley is a highly regarded fiddler with a distinctive and lyrical style. He has collaborated with such renowned players as Paddy O’Brien of Chulrua\, Daithi Sproule of Altan\, Brian Miller of Bua\, and Norah Rendell of The Outside Track. Since moving to Boston in 2013\, Nathan has also released Life Is All Checkered with Laura Feddersen\, and The Truckley Howl with Mairead Hurley and John Blake. He has taught and performed at festivals in Ireland\, New Zealand\, and throughout the United States on both fiddle and guitar. \nPortland resident Marshall has emerged as one of the foremost accompanists of traditional music. Known locally for his long tenure with The Press Gang\, he has toured and recorded with the likes of Seamus Egan\, Liz Carroll\, Dervish\, and Jenna Moynihan. \nCopley Street’s music is a celebration of tradition\, honed through years of collaboration and live performance. They deliver music that is full of lift\, nuance\, and sheer musical joy. DESCRIPTION:The 2025 season of Concerts in West K (now in its new home at the Brick Store Museum) kicks off Friday evening\, March 7\, at 7:30 pm\, with a concert by Newberry & Verch! Joe Newberry and April Verch are superb musicians who grew up steeped in the traditions of home and hearth—Joe in the Missouri Ozarks\, and April in the Ottawa Valley of Canada. \nAlthough they are on the road much of the year\, the two musicians are fond of saying that they are rarely homesick because their music means they always have a bit of home with them wherever they go. Known around the world for his clawhammer banjo playing\, Newberry is also a powerful guitarist\, singer\, and award-winning songwriter. Verch is known both for her superb fiddle playing—she was the first woman to win both the Canadian Grand Masters and Canadian Open Fiddling Championships—and her outstanding stepdancing. They have both toured and recorded extensively (as a duo and in other configurations). We’re honored and delighted to bring them to Kennebunk! \nThis concert takes place in the Brick Store Museum’s Dane Street Program Center. Suggested parking can be found in the Town of Kennebunk municipal parking lot accessed via Green Street. \nTickets will be sold online until 12pm on Friday\, March 7. DESCRIPTION:Noted Pianist Jacqueline Schwab in Concert in Kennebunk\nPianist Jacqueline Schwab\, heard on Ken Burns’ Civil War and numerous other documentaries by him\, will perform in concert at First Parish UU Church of Kennebunk\, on Sunday\, September 29\, 2024\, at 4:30 p.m. Jacqueline will feature pieces from her Burns soundtrack performances and will also from her own work celebrating cultural diversity\, inspired by her work with Ken. You’ll hear Irish and Scottish airs and dance tunes\, spirituals\, ragtime and other vintage American music\, and vintage Latin and other pieces connected with American immigrants. Jacqueline will share stories about the tunes and speak about Burns’ unusual way of working with music—how he elicits emotive performances and uses music to amplify his messages and shed historical light on our lives today.\n\nJacqueline spins emotive musical stories out of the myriad strands in the American quilt\, with the spirit of community music making at their heart. Her signature playing features in over a dozen of Ken Burns’ documentaries\, including his Grammy-winning Civil War\, Baseball\, Lewis and Clark\, Mark Twain\, The War and his recently-released Benjamin Franklin\, as well as in other PBS documentaries\, such as The Irish in America—The Long Journey Home. She has performed at the White House for President Clinton and (twice) on national PBS with the American Pops Orchestra\, and she has accompanied Scottish singer Jean Redpath on public radio’s A Prairie Home Companion and on CBS’s Late Show with David Letterman. She is well known to the traditional dance world for her groundbreaking playing with the Bare Necessities ensemble. Her recently-released solo album I Lift My Lamp—Illuminations from Immigrant America celebrates vintage music from American immigrants. Jacqueline graduated from New England Conservatory\, majoring in piano improvisation. She grew up in Pittsburgh and has since lived in Boston and on Cape Cod.\n\nJacqueline’s concert is part of the “Concerts in West K!” series\, produced by Mousam River Music in its new collaboration with the Brick Store Museum. Admission to the concert is $20.00 per person at the door. There is open seating for the concert on a first come-first served basis. SUMMARY:Gerry O'Connor & Kevin McElroy (Concerts in West K!) NEW VENUE
DESCRIPTION:Gerry O’Connor\, one of the most celebrated Irish fiddlers of our time\, will appear in concert in Kennebunk\, Wednesday evening\, July 24\, at 7:30 p.m.\, presented by Mousam River Music.\n\nThe concert is part of the long-running “Concerts in West K!” series\, but will take place in the series’ new home in the Dane Street Program Center of the Brick Store Museum in downtown Kennebunk. The museum is at 117 Main Street in Kennebunk\, adjacent to the Town Hall\, and across the street from the Unitarian Church and town library. The Dane Street Program Center is directly behind the main museum building.\n\nO’Connor grew up in the town of Dundalk\, County Louth\, Ireland\, in a family of musicians\, dancers\, and singers. His mother\, Rose (née O’Brien) was a fiddler who taught him and his siblings the fiddle at home. His father\, Peter\, was a singer. As a young man\, O’Connor won numerous All-Ireland awards as both a solo artist and as a member of duos\, trios\, and bands. Playing with County Sligo fiddle master John Joe Gardiner in the 1970s was an important step in O’Connor developing his own fluid and lyrical fiddle style. He also credits his experience as a step-dancer in giving his music its rock-steady rhythm and lively pulse.\n\nJoining Gerry will be Portland guitarist and singer Kevin McElroy. For the past three decades McElroy has performed regularly with such luminaries as Seamus Connolly\, Brendan Tonra\, and Joe Burke. He and O’Connor were brought together by their shared love of fiddles and fiddle-making; they share a wealth of mutual inspirations and musical influences. O’Connor’s expressive melodies and McElroy’s tasteful accompaniment come together through a seamless bit of musical alchemy.\n\nThe concert will take place Friday evening\, June 21\, from 7:30-9:30 p.m.\, in the Dane Street Program Center of the Brick Store Museum\, at 117 Main Street in Kennebunk.\n\nThere is open seating for the concert on a first-come\, first-served basis. Admission is by $20.00 per person at the door.
