The story of Kennebunk Beach is the evolution, during the last decades of the nineteenth century and early decades of the twentieth centuries, of farmland along the coast into a thriving summer resort community. As the shipbuilding era of Kennebunk drew to a close the new industry of summer visitors took its place. By Rosalind Magnuson (2000)
