The Brick Store Museum and The Kennebunk Free Library were proud to present this collaborative exhibition showcasing highlights from their collective archival holdings. The exhibition focused on the legacy of turn-of-the-century Kennebunk photographers. Their photographs—in many instances reproduced from the original glass plate negatives—are integral to the visualization and understanding of Kennebunk at the turn of the 20th century. The exhibition was curated by Kathy Ostrander, who has extensively researched the collections at the Museum and Library over the years and has selected a sampling of approximately 150 archival images, many of which will be on display for the first time. Centering on depictions of local residences, several of which are highly recognizable within the local streetscape, Ostranderpainstakingly located the modern-day properties and personally photographed them in color from the same angle as the originals. With the vintage images hung alongside contemporary reality, the result was an intriguing and stunning juxtaposition of "then and now." Over 300 photographic pairings filled two-and-a-half galleries at The Brick Store Museum and invited comparison, conversation and reminiscences. A companion display at the Kennebunk Free Library highlighted photographer Albion Moody and the Library's specific holdings. Reproduced images from the exhibition may be purchased for personal use, with the proceeds benefiting the institution that holds the source image.
