KEN RAYNOR, 2007

P.G.A. Head Professional, Cape Arundel Golf Club; b. 1952

“I photographed Ken giving a tour of the golf course to five-time Olympic Gold Medalist Bonnie Blair, who was attending the fifth annual George Bush Cape Arundel Classic. Ken was pointing out the Kennebunk River.”

Ken Raynor is a New York native. He played golf his four years at Nasson College before coming to Kennebunkport, Maine, in 1974 and joining Cape Arundel Golf Club. He become the head professional in 1979, when he was just 27 years old. He is a past president of the Maine Chapter of the P.G.A. and Vice President of the New England P.G.A.  For a time, Raynor balanced two jobs, as he was also the Director of Golf at the Coral Creek Golf Course in Placida, Florida.

His relationship with the Bush family since the late 1970s has earned Ken Raynor the nickname “the President’s Pro.” During the summer months, Raynor and former president George H. W. Bush are a common sight on the course. Raynor was even witness to a bit of history on July 6, 2001: the first time George W. Bush as president would play a round of golf with his father. Raynor was also on hand for another historic round, when former presidents Bush and Clinton teed off together at Cape Arundel in June 2005.

Raynor has been honored three times as Maine Professional of the Year and won the Maine P.G.A. Senior Championship in 2003. That same year, he was named the New England P.G.A. Professional of the Year—the highest honor—and in 2005 was inducted into the Maine Golf Hall of Fame. With a score of 64, Raynor holds a past Cape Arundel course record. He is a consultant for Titleist, a leading manufacturer of golf balls and equipment, and conducts custom fitting seminars for P.G.A. Professionals nationwide. He remains active in the P.G.A. by teaching classes throughout the country. His mission in instruction is to “help students learn and achieve goals above their expectations.” Off the course, Raynor is an avid fly fisherman.

Raynor loaned for this exhibition a framed copy from his office of an article appearing in the February 1988 issue of Golf World.

“The Kennebunks represent. . . a high quality of life which I’ve shared with family and friends.”
