February 14 - 23, 2008 Making History: A Mini-Exhibition by the Students of STRETCH BEYOND
The Brick Store Museum is pleased to have once again worked with MSAD 71’s Stretch Beyond Program in offering a multi-week course entitled, "Travel Back in Time" for 1st-3rd graders. The students have learned about history and museums via a variety of projects, which included painting floor cloths, exploring Colonial Era costumes, and creating displays for Making History, a mini-exhibition showing that history is being made every day. Making History incorporates personal items that each student has selected as being special to him/her and that could appear in a museum 100 years from now. An opening reception awarding these "junior curators" will take place at 4pm on February 14th at the Museum.
The exhibition will remain on view at the Museum through February 23 and then be on view at the Kennebunk Elementary School Library for a week.
February 20, 2008 (snow date: February 21) A Case of Missing Identity: A History Workshop for Kids Exploring Kennebunk's Past - 9:45AM-3PM
To coincide with the schools’ winter vacation, kids in grades 4 through 8 are invited to spend a fun day at the Museum being "history sleuths" honing their investigative skills and using their powers of deduction. They'll sift through clues from historical records and artifacts in the Museum's collections to piece together the identity and background of an actual person or place from Kennebunk's past. Who or what will it be? Working in groups, the "detectives" will creatively reveal their findings—perhaps as a news broadcast, mini-documentary, or historical reenactment. Whatever format they choose, their presentations will be videotaped and recorded to DVDs as keepsakes of the day.
Pre-registration required by February 13. CLICK HERE for the registration form (PDF format, 524k). Cost is $25/child ($20 for Museum members).
Made possible by a grant from The Virginia Hodgkins Somers Foundation.

April 19, 2008 Working Backwards: A Workshop Exploring the Art of Reverse Painting on Glass- 9AM-12PM
You asked; we listened! This workshop was originally run in 2007 just for kids, but adults were so impressed that we've brought it back as an intergenerational, hands-on program for participants ages 7 to 107.
Reverse painting on glass is an interesting and popular art form dating back many centuries, frequently appearing as miniatures or as decorative inlays on pieces such as clocks. The artist’s “canvas” is the glass itself, and the artist works in reverse. Fine details are applied first. Layer by layer, the image fills in, with the background painted last. Participants will view examples from the Museum's collections and will then be able to choose from five different designs (based upon actual Brick Store Museum artifacts!) to create their very own reverse painting on glass. Cost is $15 per person ($12 for museum members). Pre-registration is required by April 12.
Made possible by a grant from The Virginia Hodgkins Somers Foundation.

The Brick Store Museum, Maine Historical Society, Old York Historical Society and the Saco Museum joined forces to produce a definitive catalogue entitled, Agreeable Situations, and an exhibition by the same name.
Now--21 years later--it's "Agreeable Situations revisited," and the original principals have reunited to organize and present at the Maine Historical Society a day-long symposium on the very themes that launched Agreeable Situations into the spotlight more than two decades ago.

68th Annual Members' Meeting

The Brick Store Museum is gearing up to temporarily move some of its collections to offsite storage in anticipation of structural restoration work on its historical buildings. Rather than pack the museum's works of fine art that are in ornate and delicate gilded frames, we have opted instead to exhibit as many as possible in our upstairs gallery. This installation is entitled, Salon Style, so named for the stacked display format made popular by private collectors of the 18th and 19th centuries to showcase their holdings.
Made possible by the following proud Business Partners: Jeffrey A. Bonney, CFP®, Captain Lord Mansion, and Ocean Bank.

Space is limited. Pre-registration and payment required by July 12. Cost of $30/child ($25 for Museum members) includes a nutritious snack and all program supplies.

September 25, 2008 Lafayette, The Farewell Tour, & the New Hampshire and Maine Visits - 7PM in the Museum's Program Center at 4 Dane Street
In 1824-1825, the aging American Revolutionary War hero General Lafayette made a farewell tour of all 24 United States. He was greeted by throngs of adoring Americans at every stop, including in Kennebunk in 1825. Lafayette's private secretary Auguste Levasseur chronicled the voyage in a journal published in French in 1829. Today, thanks to Alan R. Hoffman, the first unabridged English translation of Levasseur's journal is enjoying renewed acclaim. Passionate about American history and Lafayette, Hoffman will speak about this epic project and recount Lafayette's historic voyage, with particular detail given to his stops in New Hampshire and southern Maine. The lecture and book signing are free of charge with donations gratefully accepted. Hardcover copies of the book Lafayette in America will be on sale at the event for $30.
