Gabriel Frey, a 12th generation Passamaquoddy basketmaker, will demonstrate his craft from 10am – 2pm on Saturday, October 12th. Gabriel is an award-winning basketmaker who willI demonstrate the traditional process of preparing and refining black ash for basket weaving, starting from a log and ending with complete basket.
Admission to the demonstration is included with your Museum admission ticket on October 12th.
Gabriel specializes in utility baskets. Growing up Sipayik and Motahkomikuk, Gabriel learned all aspects of black ash basket making tradition from locating the black ash tree, processing the log into weaving material, and weaving the basket. Over the past 18 years Gabriel has strived to honor his grandfather’s style of basket making while incorporating his own modern aesthetic. Gabriel currently resides with his wife and two children in Orono, Maine.
