47 Years at the Super Bowl: What It Means to Be in the “Never Miss a Super Bowl Club” opens

Come see a History Showcase featuring artifacts and archival materials from football’s biggest game, the Super Bowl. 47 Years at the Super Bowl: What It Means to be in the “Never Miss a Super Bowl Club” will display objects from the personal collection of Don Crisman, who has attended every Super Bowl since its beginning in 1967.

Winter Workshop for Grades 3 through 8 – 9:30AM – 3:00PM

Kids in grades 4-8 are invited to take part in the Brick Store Museum’s Winter History Workshop! Students can look forward to learning more about our Civil War history by participating in various projects throughout the day.

The workshop will begin with a tour through the Museum’s new exhibit, From the Kennebunks to Appomattox: The Civil War at Home and Away. The workshop will include presentations by Civil War reenactors of the 3rd Maine Regiment; learning about 1860s medicine; 19th Century games; and much more. The day concludes with family members and the general public invited to the Museum from 2:30 to 3PM to view the students’ projects and to tour the Museum’s exhibitions. As lasting memories of the day, children take home everything they have created.

To Sea: The Maritime Heritage of the Kennebunks opens

The Brick Store Museum presents the maritime heritage of the region through marine art, artifacts, and archival objects. This show will include recently conserved pieces of art, artifacts from ships and shipyards, and ship’s logs and personal letters from those sailing overseas in the 19th century.

Kennebunk Savings Bank’s annual Customer Ballot is now in the mail to their customers. Your vote will help the Brick Store Museum be in the top 125 organizations to receive the most votes and share in $140,000!

Customers can vote by dropping off their Ballots at bank locations, by mail, or by going towww.kennebunksavings.com/ballot and using the code from their printed ballot. So keep an eye on your mail, and vote by April 30!

Join us at the Library for a free discussion of the classic tale of Moby Dick by Herman Melville. Pick up your free copy of the book at the Kennebunk Free Library (or download it for free on your favorite e-reader!).

Hear what others have to say, and let us know what you think! This story might even give us a glimpse into the lives and psyches of the sailors from the Kennebunk area in the 19th Century.

Blue Star Museums Free Admission to Active Duty Service Members and Families

The Brick Store Museum and more than 1,300 museums across America have joined with Blue Star Museums, a partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and Blue Star Families, to offer free admission to all active duty military personnel and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day 2013.

Leadership support has been provided by MetLife Foundation through Blue Star Families. The complete list of participating museums is available at www.arts.gov/bluestarmuseums.

Words of the Ocean Poetry Contest opens
Brick Store Museum

Amateur poets of all ages are invited to submit an original poem about the ocean, maritime history, or anything to do with nautical themes. Poems should be limited to one page, and can encompass any style.

Send your poem in a .word or .pdf document, with your name, address, phone number, and email in the header of the page to research@brickstoremuseum.org. Please enter “Poetry Contest” in the subject line. Limit to ONE poem per poet. Submissions will be accepted through August 9, 2013. Winning selections will be chosen by the Library and Museum staffs. Winners will be announced at the Chowder Festival on September 14, 2013.

Sea Shanties Concert – 7:00PM

For nearly half a century, Bob Webb has presented the music of seafarers to audiences. A singer, instrumentalist, and raconteur, Bob will reach all ages in this program of traditional seafaring songs, as sung aboard merchant ships in the Golden Age of Sail.

Group participation is strongly encouraged! Bring the whole family for this night of fun and song!

This program is free and open to the public. Donations will always be accepted and appreciated to continue programs like these.

Rusticators! History of Kennebunk Beach Walking Tour and Reception – 3:00PM – 6:30PM

Kick off the summer and celebrate the history of Kennebunk Beach! This event pairs a historic walking tour of Kennebunk Beach, led by Museum Archivist Roz Magnuson, and a cocktail reception to toast the summer evening at a historic beach cottage built by local architect William Barry in 1888.

Lecture begins at 3:00PM, with the walking tour to start at 4:30PM. Return to the cottage for cocktails and delicious hors d’oeuvres through 6:30PM.

Tickets are $35 per person. All proceeds from this event benefit the Brick Store Museum and its efforts to become sustainable for future generations.

FIELD TRIP: Portsmouth Naval Shipyard – SOLD OUT!
Begin at the Brick Store Museum

Save this date for this rare tour of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard! Meet at the Museum to board the bus bound for this active naval base in Kittery. Upon arrival, hear about the shipyard’s 200-year history from Gary Hildreth, a retired U.S. Navy Submariner. After lunch (included with ticket price) in the base’s tavern, take a look at the shipyard as you have never seen it before!

Tickets: $35.00 per person

This program requires registration at least one week prior to the field trip due to security. Please register for this event by NO LATER than Saturday, June 15.

Monday Night Movie: Pirates of the Caribbean- 6:00PM
Kennebunk Free Library

Join us for a nautical movie night! To introduce the 2003 movie about pirate misadventures on the high seas, hear from Museum staff about how Kennebunk’s own sea captains encountered piracy in the South.

This film runs 143 minutes long, and is rated PG-13. This is a free event, but donations are always welcome. Snacks and drinks will be made available for purchase.

3rd Annual Brick Store Museum Photography Contest opens for submissions

Edith Barry, the Museum’s founder, was an artist, photographer, and world traveler. Join in Edith Barry’s legacy of photography by defining culture today through YOUR images.

This contest is open to amateur photographers of all ages. Submissions of up to four images per person will be accepted from July 16 – September 6, 2013. Every submitted photograph will appear on the contest website, and winners will be chosen by talented judges from the Southern Maine art community.

A concert of tunes familiar and foreign from Broadway and beyond. Jean Strazdes, the Artistic Director of the Seaglass Chorale accompanied by Christopher Farr, the Executive Director of the Brick Store Museum will present a program of favorite songs, including works by Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Kander and Ebb and others. FIELD TRIP: Maine Maritime Museum/Bath Iron Works, 10AM
Depart from the Brick Store Museum

Meet at the Brick Store Museum at 8:30AM to embark on a field trip to Bath, Maine. Upon arrival at the Maine Maritime Museum, take a docent-led tour of the Museum and stop for lunch (bring a lunch to enjoy outside, or stop by the museum’s cafe – not included with ticket). Then, board the bus for a tour of Bath Iron Works to learn about modern-day shipbuilding in Maine. Return to the Museum for free time in the afternoon, and then board the bus to Kennebunk!

Tickets: $50.00 per person

This field trip requires registration at least one week prior to the event due to security at Bath Iron Works. Please register by NO LATER than Saturday, July 13.

Author Lecture: Stephen Erickson – 7:00PM

Have you ever wondered what really happened after the 19th Century shipwreck on Boon Island? Hear from Stephen Erickson, author of 2012’s Boon Island: A True Story of Mutiny, Shipwreck, and Cannibalism, discuss the history of the shipwreck made famous by Kenneth Roberts’ novel titled Boon Island.

Kid’s History Workshop – 9:30AM – 2:30PM

Kids ages 8 to 12 are invited to take part in a one-day history workshop to learn about the history and heritage of sea captains, their ships, and cargos that traveled from Kennebunk in the 19th Century. Participants will begin with a tour of the Museum’s galleries before creating sailor’s knot bracelets, reverse paintings on glass, and learning about the craft of scrimshaw.

$20 per child, $15 for Museum members. Register by August 3. Call the Museum at 207-985-4802 or visit us at 117 Main Street in Kennebunk to sign up. Family discounts are available. Registration includes all materials and a snack. Participants must bring their own lunches. Parents and the general public are invited to the Museum from 2:30-3:00PM to view children’s creations. As a lasting memory of the day, participants take home everything that they have created!

Join us for a rousing evening of charades featuring your favorite films! During this unique fundraising event, you will discover a whole new meaning to “summer theater!” Enjoy cocktails and canapes as friends and family make their best guesses. It’s time to act out! Tickets for this event, which runs from 5:00PM – 7:00PM, are $25.00 per person. All proceeds fund Brick Store Museum educational programs, exhibitions, and operating fund.

See the romantic and tragic tale of Kennebunk’s Captain Charles Barry and his wife, Sarah, come to life! In this original play written by the Brick Store Museum, Captain Barry and his wife speak to each other through letters sent from their home in Kennebunk to various locations around the world during his travels as a ship captain.

Shipbuilding Odyssey – 1:30PM – 4:30PM

In a Brick Store Museum exclusive, learn about the Kennebunks’ storied shipbuilding past. This 3-hour heritage tour begins at the Museum with a brief, illustrated talk about what life was like in the Kennebunks’ many shipyards and what it took to build the vessels that eventually sailed trade routes spanning the globe. You’ll then embark on a special, narrated trolley excursion that takes you to various local sites associated with shipbuilding along the Kennebunk River in the 1800s. The afternoon winds up back at the Museum for refreshments, viewing related collections, and receiving a commemorative gift. KFL Book Discussion Group – 50 Years of Fortitude

Join us for the second book discussion of the summer to discover more about Kennebunk’s own Captain Blaisdell! A native of this town, he captained several ships built by William Lord, the original owner of the Brick Store.

Travel on the adventurous high seas with Blaisdell as he encounters shipwrecks, financial problems, trade troubles, and ports around the world, all the while missing his family that remained behind in Kennebunk.

Stop by the Kennebunk Free Library to pick up your free copy of 50 Years of Fortitude by Kendrick Daggett.

Help us celebrate the end of a successful slate of programming! Join the Museum and Library for a chowder tasting, generously donated by area restaurants. Which one is your favorite?

Taste the best efforts of the area’s brightest restaurants as you tour the Museum and Library. As you taste, relax and listen as the winners of the Words of the Ocean Poetry contest are announced.

At 2:30pm, a special presentation of “Battle in the Bottle,” a one-act play written by Steve Hrehovcik, will be performed in the Museum’s program center.

No advance purchase necessary. The $5.00 entry fee will go directly to the Library and Museum.

The Pastel Painters of Maine International Juried Show imbues two galleries of the Brick Store Museum with color, vibrancy, and a wonderful array of imagery! The juried show runs for a month, until October 19, 2013 – don’t miss it!

A full-color exhibition catalogue will be available for purchase at the Museum.

Lord Portraits’ Return Reception – 5:00PM – 7:00PM

This special Museum Members event welcomes the portraits of William and Sarah Lord, painted by Maine art Thomas Badger in the 19th Century, back home to Kennebunk! The portraits arrived at the Museum earlier this year through a donation from the Lord family. Monsters Ball exhibition opens

Join the Museum for this special holiday treat! Clothing from the Museum’s collection of 19th and 20th Century costume collection will be on display in this rollicking fun exhibit with a spooky twist.

Take a look at some of the more whimsical items in the Museum’s costume collection, complete with Halloween masks to match. This exhibit will be on display for a limited time – so hurry in! Exhibit runs through November 15.

10th Annual All Souls’ Walk – continuous tours offered beginning at 1:00PM, with the last tour departing at 4:00PM

Begin at the Museum for a narrated walk with costumed interpreters through Hope Cemetery to visit the graves and hear the fascinating and sometimes tragic tales of Kennebunk residents from the past three centuries. Featured stories include ones about ill-fated sea captains, a Kennebunk Civil War soldier, a spinster and her namesake ship, and a tragedy in the White Mountains. The tours conclude back at the Museum for light refreshments and for viewing the portraits in the galleries of many featured on the walk. Not too spooky, it’s perfect for the whole family!

Cost is $10/person (cash/check/Visa, MC, Discover), $30 maximum per family; no advance reservations are required unless for large groups. This event occurs rain or shine, as we do have the capability to run an “indoor version” as an illustrated talk.

10th Annual Holiday Tea – 3:00PM – 5:00PM

Continue a holiday tradition with the Museum’s 10th Annual Holiday Tea! The Museum invites families for a rare look inside a historic Kennebunk home! Learn a bit about tea, etiquette customs, and the storied history of the residence…all while enjoying hot tea and delectable treats.

Space is limited, and advance reservations are required. Cost is $20 for adults ($15 for museum members) and $7.50 for children 14 and under; kids aged 4 and under are free.
