ARCHIVES

The Brick Store Museum also serves as the Kennebunk historical society, and welcomes those who are interested in using our collections to conduct historical research, find out about the history of their home, or discover their genealogical roots.

Extensive primary source materials ranging from diaries and family papers to commercial records, maps and architectural drawings attract researchers of all ages. Particularly significant are more than 3,000 historical photographs and vintage postcards, plus indexes for Kennebunk-built ships, local history subjects and genealogical collections. Area newspapers dating back to 1877 exist as bound originals and/or on microfilm.

A section of the archives is devoted to Maine authors, with sizable collections pertaining to Sarah Orne Jewett, Kenneth Roberts, and Booth Tarkington. Institutional records chronicling the Museum’s own history are rich in materials pertaining to the life of artist and Museum founder Edith Cleaves Barry (1884 – 1969).

HOW TO CONDUCT RESEARCH

If you are unable to visit the Archives, the Brick Store Museum will be happy to perform research for you upon request. Museum staff will perform the research to the best of our abilities. The first half hour of research is complimentary; each additional half hour is $5.00. Members are free. Research charges include up to 10 photocopies and postage. If our initial research shows extensive results, you will be contacted before the expenses are incurred. Research fees can be paid via check or credit card.

You are invited to visit the Archives Center when the Archivist is present and available for research appointments, typically Tuesday through Thursday. Appointments are strongly recommended. Without calling ahead, the Museum staff cannot guarantee immediate assistance. By contacting us ahead of time, we will be able to properly locate and research sources for your inquiry. Every visit to the Archives is free, but donations are always appreciated.
