1948 Radio

General Electric Radio, circa 1948, 8" tall x 12.5" wide. 1996.010

Gift of Mrs. Joseph Lyman.

This General Electric 115-watt table top radio features a plastic cover, dark ivory and gold-tone knobs, and a gold-tone speaker cover. It still has its original backing and electrical cord.

Before the advent of television, radio was a key piece of entertainment. Not only would listeners enjoy music and the news, but radio stations also played continuing stories and dramatic tales of adventure, much like the television does today.

You can currently see this radio on exhibit in the Museum's newest 2012 History Showcase, Use It Up, Wear It Out, Make It Do or Do Without: The Material Culture of World War II.
