turkish shoes

Turkish Shoes, c. 1920. 1936.2372

These shoes, part of the Museum's large shoe collection, came from Turkey in the early 20th Century. They were brought back by the anonymous donor after a visit to the country. The shoes in the Museum's collection range from Kennebunk High School wrestling sneakers, to 1925 rhinestone heels, to foreign shoes that many have never seen before. This pair of interesting Turkish shoes demonstrates just how wide-ranging the shoe collection is.

Made of textured leather, the shoes have raised details painted in gold. They have no heel. At the point of each shoe is a bright red pompom.

You can find more of the Museum's shoe collection featured in "75 Years in the Life of a Collection: Spotlight on Shoes" now on view at the Kennebunk Free Library.
