Birchbark box, circa 1900, 6.25" square x 2.5" high.
Brick Store Museum Collection, 1936.574.

Not much is known about this lidded box which has been in the museum's collections since the 1930s. It is made from birchbark and laced with reeds on the top rim and lid. Designs etched on all sides of the box, as well as on the lid, include the pelt of an animal, leaves, four people in a canoe, two deer, two trees, and two tents. It is believed to be the work of a Maine tribe, possibly produced as a handicraft for sale to tourists.
