Sweetgrass basket

Sweet grass basket, 1ate 19th century/early 20th century, Maine, 24 cm x 29 cm at base.
Brick Store Museum Collection, 79.I.62.

This basket was likely made in the late 19th or early 20th century for carrying personal gear. The green dyed, wooden splints are interwoven with twisted sweet grass. The two handles (not visible in the photo) are also of sweet grass.

Sweet grass is a hardy perennial native to North America with a variety of uses. Many Native American cultures incorporate sweet grass in basket-making and as a ceremonial incense.
