Brick Store Museum Happenings

Exploring the Wonders of History September 2009
Collage blockFall is in the air!  Despite remnants of a hurricane the last weekend in August, we were fully booked for our Shipbuilding Odyssey lecture and trolley excursion. Response for this heritage tour exceeded capacity and was so overwhelming that you can rest assured that we're already looking to run it again as part of next year's line-up!

Thanks as well to all who turned out for our "Jig Your Way into Labor Day" friend-raiser event on September 2.  We welcomed several new members and had a lovely end-of-summer evening with yummy ice cream from The Daily Scoop and great tunes from Two Old Friends.

Now it's time to transition into autumn with the following great activities at the Museum. We have some traditional favorites coming up, as well as some all-new experiences.  As always, hope to see you soon!

Sincerely,

The Brick Store Museum

Book Signing with Archivist on September 26

Learning is an Ornament, by Rosalind MagnusonOn the heels of her previous successes chronicling the history of Kennebunk Beach and the architecture of the historic district, as well as the area's manufacturing heritage along the Mousam River, the Museum's archivist Rosalind Magnuson is now out with her fourth book: Learning is an Ornament: Education in Kennebunk from its Earliest Settlements to the Formation of SAD #71.

With 220 pages, it's her longest publication yet! Included are nearly 100 vintage images culled not only from the Museum's archives but also from private collections throughout the Kennebunks. Says Magnuson, "From the earliest students attending a one-room schoolhouse to the students who today have access to the latest in educational innovation, Kennebunk has always provided a unique approach to learning."

Books are on sale at the Museum for $27.95, and as always, members receive a 10% discount. In conjunction with Smithsonian Museum Day (see below), Magnuson will be on hand in our galleries to autograph books and answer questions on Saturday, September 26 from 11AM to 1PM.

Historical Drama Comes to Museum on Sept. 30
Submit!

Don't  miss  a chance to experience Maine history firsthand, when the historical drama, Submit! comes to the Museum's Program Center at 4 Dane Street on Wednesday, September 30, at 7PM.  Tickets sold in advance and at the door are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, and $5 for children up to age 16.

What happened to the Province of Maine more than 350 years ago is the basis of this compelling theater performance. Submit! was initially written for York, Maine's 350th anniversary in 2002 as a full-length production with multiple actors by York author and playwright Michael Kimball--whose plays have been produced nationally and have even earned him an Edgar nomination--and award-winning journalist Jennifer Saunders. Through the Museums of Old York and a generous grant from Kennebunk Savings Bank, Kimball and Saunders teamed up once again to distill the original production into a four-person, one-act version.

Partial cast of "Submit!"This new iteration of Submit! re-creates a cold November morning in 1652, when two powerful men come face to face in Nicholas Davis's Tavern in Gorgeana, or what is now known as York Harbor. In an hour's time, the formidable Simon Bradstreet of Massachusetts Bay Colony and Edward Godfrey, the founder of Gorgeana, struggle over the fate of a city, a colony, and the soul of a new nation. In that one hour, our destinies as future "Mainers" changed forever. The audience is brought into the production in the place of the actual citizens of Gorgeana, where they are asked to choose whether to side with Massachusetts Bay Colony or remain, as their town's founder urges them, independent and free.

Submit! is directed by Joe Dominguez, features instrumental music recorded by Joyce Andersen, and stars renowned Seacoast actors Roland Goodbody as Sir Thomas Morton, Don Court as Edward Godfrey, Gregg Trzaskowski as Commissioner Simon Bradstreet, and Jennifer Saunders as Gorgeana local Mary Tapp.

This production originated with the Museums of Old York, with the Brick Store Museum venue made possible by a grant from the Virginia Hodgkins Somers Foundation.

INSIDE SPOTLIGHT

Sarah Lindblom and her husband Erik, owners of the Captain Jefferds Inn
The Value of Museums,
by Sarah Lindblom, owner of The Captain Jefferds Inn, Kennebunkport, Maine

Sarah Lindblom's commentary below is excerpted from a larger article, "The View from Outside the Museum" originally appearing in the Spring 2009 newsletter of the New England Museum Association. It is reprinted here with permission.

"I have always been interested in history, in particular local history. I grew up in a 1774 farmhouse in a town in Connecticut that was occupied by the British during the Revolutionary War. I also had the good fortune to have parents who were interested in their family's heritage. Hence, as a child I was taken to our local museums and countless cemeteries, as well as museums throughout our travels. Now we live in Kennebunkport, Maine, and are the keepers of an inn that was built by a sea captain in 1804. The area has a rich shipbuilding history that is preserved by our local Brick Store Museum, a true gem of a museum that helps link the hard work and spirit of the past with the present community in which we live or visit. We encourage our guests to visit the museum to help them get a fell for the life and culture of the Kennebunks from the past through to the present. The guests who visit the museum or take part in different activities are always impressed with the exhibits and staff and feel that they gain a better understanding of the area and its history."

TCM DVD "Lost Boundaries"

...that the 1949 classic, "Lost Boundaries" starring Mel Ferrer,  was partially filmed in the Kennebunks?  Based upon a true story, the film--directed by  Alfred Werker--took a groundbreaking look at prejudice and racism in America. Some 85 townspeople took part as extras in scenes shot in various homes, the South Congregational Church and the Kennebunkport Post Office.

Thanks to astute Museum patron Robert Pearce for noting that for the first time ever, this film is now commercially available  on DVD!
