Lecture to Spotlight Lafayette's Maine Visit
Thursday, September 25 at 7PM in the Museum's Program Center at 4 Dane Street
Alan R. Hoffman presents:
Lafayette, the Farewell Tour, and the New Hampshire and Maine Visits
In 1824-1825, the aging American Revolutionary War hero General Lafayette made a farewell tour of all 24 United States. He was greeted by adoring throngs at every stop, including in Kennebunk in 1825. Lafayette's private secretary Auguste Levasseur chronicled the voyage in a journal published in French in 1829. Today, thanks to Alan R. Hoffman, the first unabridged English translation of Levasseur's journal is enjoying renewed acclaim. Passionate about American history and Lafayette, Hoffman will speak about this epic project and recount Lafayette's historic voyage, with particular detail given to his stops in New Hampshire and southern Maine. The lecture and book signing are free of charge with donations gratefully accepted; no advance reservations required. Hardcover copies of the book Lafayette in America in 1824 and 1825 (already in its second printing!) will be on sale at the event for $30.

Road Rally to Include Museum
The Museum is pleased to once again be a stop within the Historic Road Rally of the Kennebunks, scheduled for September 28th and sponsored and organized by The Casco Bay Group at Smith Barney. Drivers and navigators decipher clues to reach historic places throughout the Kennebunks, solve problems, gather information and meet time requirements (all within the local speed limits, of course!). Points are awarded for completing the course accurately and within the times allotted.

Two Old Friends to Perform at Museum
Two Old Friends are giving a live matinee concert at the Museum's Program Center at 2PM on Sunday, October 19 that you won't want to miss!
In their first-ever performance at the Museum, Mac McHale and Emery Hutchins, original founders of Northeast Winds, will delight audiences young and old with music from Ireland, the mountains, and the sea. With banjo, guitar, mandolin, concertina, bodran, octave mandolin, and heart-warming vocal harmonies, Two Old Friends tell a story in music of how immigrants came to this country from Ireland, Scotland, and Great Britain, bringing their melodies and instruments. They show just how the old time country ballads of the Appalachians are rooted in these tunes. Join us at the Museum's Program Center for plaintive ballads, foot-stomping shout tunes, soaring mandolin solos, and more!
Tickets are $10 each, or 3 for $25, and are available from the Museum in advance or at the door.
Made possible by a grant from the Virginia Hodgkins Somers Foundation. |

All Souls' Walk Tradition Resumes
With October right around the corner, it's time to mark your calendars for the 5th Annual All Souls' Walk, Saturday, October 25, with your choice between two tours times: either at 2PM or 4PM.
Begin at the Museum for a narrated, historical walk through Kennebunk's Hope Cemetery to visit the graves and hear from costumed interpreters the fascinating and sometimes tragic tales of Kennebunk residents from the past 250 years. The tours conclude back at the Museum for light refreshments and for viewing the portraits in the galleries of those featured on the walk. Cost is $5/person (cash/check/Visa, MC, Discover); no advance reservations are required unless for large groups. This event will occur rain or shine as an alternate, indoor version is available in case of inclement weather.
Made possible by a grant from the Virginia Hodgkins Somers Foundation.

Inside Spotlight
Why I'm a Member...
and How You Can Become One, Too
by Liam Crotty, Photographer & Museum Trustee

As a new Trustee of the Museum, Iet me make you aware of a great chance to view the Museum at no charge. Since we're a participating venue for the 2008 Smithsonian Museum Day, you and a guest can enjoy FREE admission on Saturday, September 27th, 10AM-2PM.
How?
Simply present the Museum Day admission card, which is available in the September 2008 issue of Smithsonian magazine or downloadable from HERE. This is the perfect opportunity for anyone who's been thinking about becoming a member but wanting to come in and check us out first. As an added incentive, if you join the Museum that day, we'll give you your first year's membership for 1/2 price!
Although I grew up in the Kennebunks, I moved away for many years before returning four summers ago. I knew I wanted to become more involved in the community, and the Museum was the natural choice. As a photographer, I figured the Museum was a perfect way to become more involved locally and support a great institution. What I love about the Brick Store Museum is its sense of community. I've chosen to live in a small town, because being part of a community is important to me. The Brick Store Museum has helped me strengthen those ties.
So, join me in joining the Museum. Mark your calendars for Saturday, September 27th, and remember to first download your free admission pass! |

. . . that the Museum is officially 72 years old this year? Edith Cleaves Barry (1884-1969) founded the Museum in 1936 in the building that her great-grandfather constructed in 1825 as a general store. |
