We are already in the last quarter of 2008, but there's no sign of slowing down at the Museum. If you don't believe it, simply read on: there are plenty of things to "fall for" this autumn. October has two great events, and November is even busier. What's more, there has been progress on our structural renovation efforts; read our "Inside Spotlight" column for details.
Sincerely,
The Brick Store Museum | |

October Event Reminders
Two upcoming programs are made possible by a grant from the Virginia Hodgkins Somers Foundations:
Two Old Friends (Mac McHale and Emery Hutchins) are giving a live matinee concert at the Museum's Program Center at 2PM on Sunday, October 19, featuring music from Ireland, the mountains and the sea. Tickets are $10 each, or 3 for $25, and are available from the Museum in advance or at the door.

Living Little: The MINI Series As a special tie-in with our ongoing exhibition, Living Little: A Selection of Dollhouses & Architectural Models, we are hosting a special MINI Series. On each of the first four Saturdays of November, different miniaturists will be displaying and demonstrating various facets of their hobby. The MINI Series is in an open-house format from 10AM to 1PM and is free with admission to the Museum. Programming is made possible through a grant from the Somers Foundation.
November 1: The series kicks off with six area miniaturists displaying and selling their wares, answering questions, and even demonstrating how to make mini hooked rugs and true-to-life punched flowers! Exhibitors include All Through the House (Amy Robinson); Crow Hill Bears (Sharon Soule); The Loft (Caroline Pierce); Minor Details (Julie Suchecki); Pocket People (Mary White); and Renee Bowen Miniatures (Renee Bowen). With Shaker furniture, 1"-tall jointed teddy bears, tiny lobster traps, porcelain dolls and more, this is one session you won't want to miss!
November 8: Local miniatures enthusiast Nancy Marcotte showcases fabulous room boxes she has created over the years, inspired by her travels here and abroad. Whether it's a baroque sitting room or a decorator kitchen, no two room boxes in her personal collection are alike.
November 15: Collectors Marcia and Malte Lukas fashion "excess baggage" into one-of-a-kind boutiques and residences for their amazing "Traveltown," recently written up in American Miniaturist magazine! From the Pet Hotel to the Bachelor Pad, each luggage home has a whimsical and charming story. The Lukases will be on hand to delight visitors with several of their pieces, including their newest addition: a retirement home for pardoned Thanksgiving Day turkeys!
November 22: The series concludes with James Hastrich and Linda LaRoche, small-scale furniture makers of Kennebunk. See samples of their highly detailed work and witness the steps that go into transforming full-size antiques into museum-quality replicas in miniature. |

Grabin Headlines Veterans' Day Weekend Concert Well-known musician Monica Grabin is joining forces with the Brick Store Museum to present a free public concert in the main dining hall at Kennebunk's Huntington Common at 2PM on Saturday, November 8 in honor of Veterans' Day weekend. Grabin's stirring performance, Over Here & 'Over There!': Songs and Images of the Great War traces American history in the World War I era through song, pairing her signature folk music with imagery from the Brick Store Museum's collection of World War I recruitment and morale posters--said to be the most extensive in the State of Maine. The concert is offered at no charge, but please RSVP attendance by Nov. 3 to 207-985-2810 (the Huntington Common Concierge). Program made possible by a grant from The Virginia Hodgkins Somers Foundation. |

Inside Spotlight
Building Planning
by Alan Shepard, Museum Trustee

We all know that, among other things, the Brick Store Museum is the repository of artifacts and documents that tell of our region's rich past and traditions. Beyond this, the museum's buildings themselves are a part of history and represent an attractive gateway to our villages.
Like paintings or photographs or books, old buildings must also be cared for, so they can be used and enjoyed by future generations. The Museum's Trustees have been busy over the past several years consulting with various professionals and raising the funds necessary for our buildings' structural needs.
What will it all look like, and what will it mean for our Brick Store community? Read more> |
