Witchcraft Lecture Scheduled for October 17th

Devil of Great Island book coverThe Views from Within lecture series presented collaboratively by the Kennebunkport Historical Society and The Brick Store Museum concludes for the year on Wednesday, October 17 at 7 PM.

Just in time for Halloween, our guest speaker will be Dr. Emerson "Tad" Baker, an archaeologist and public historian with Salem State College. Among his many accolades is that he has been an advisor to PBS's television series, "Colonial House." Baker's talk will focus on elements from his new book, hot off the presses: The Devil of Great Island: Witchcraft and Conflict in Early New England. Baker will recount the witchcraft hysteria that overtook a small New Hampshire town a decade before the infamous Salem witch trials and spawned copycat incidents in Maine. Hear about the strange noises and seemingly unexplainable occurrences blamed on Lithobolia, the "stone-throwing devil."

The Nonantum's dining room opens at 5:30PM for those wishing to have dinner prior to the evening program. The lecture is offered free of charge, with donations gratefully accepted. No advance reservations are required. Hardcover copies of  The Devil of Great Island will be on sale for $24.95 plus tax (10% discount for members) for the book signing to follow the lecture.  Cash, checks, VISA/MC accepted.

Joyce Butler on Hand to Answer Questions at '47 Fire Exhibition on October 20th

Exhibition icon

Haven't been into the Museum yet to see the Burned into our Memories exhibition reflecting upon the 1947 fires that devastated the state? With the official 60th anniversary almost upon us (it's the week of October 20th), consider a visit!

As an added incentive, Joyce Butler--historian and author of Wildfire Loose: The Week Maine Burned--will be on hand to answer questions in our galleries on Saturday, October 20th from 11AM to 1PM.  She'll even autograph copies of her book; bring your own, or purchase one of the few copies we still have in stock ($18.95 apiece).

If you can't make it, catch the exhibition through December 29th. Our hours are Tuesdays - Fridays, 10-4:30 and Saturdays, 10-1.

Admission is FREE for all fire, rescue, and public safety personnel and their families, with half-price Museum memberships offered if joining that night. There'll be door prizes, scavenger hunts for kids, and a special appearance by Joyce Butler, historian and author of Wildfire Loose: The Week Maine Burned. She'll be signing copies of her book and answering questions in the Burned into our Memories exhibition from 6 to 7:30PM.

All Souls' Walk Returns on October 27th
All Souls' Walk 2007

It's BAAACK! Begin at the Museum on Saturday, October 27 for a narrated walk through Hope Cemetery to visit the graves and hear the fascinating and sometimes tragic tales of early Kennebunk residents from the past 250 years. See if you can recognize your friends and colleagues among those "performing" as our costumed interpreters ranging from sea captains to spinsters.  BOO!

Tours are offered at 2PM and again at 4PM and conclude back at the Museum for light refreshments and for viewing the portraits in the galleries of those featured on the walk. Cost is $5/person (cash/check/VISA or MC); no advance reservations required unless for large groups.

This event will happen rain or shine, as an indoor version of the tour is available in case of inclement weather.  (Coming from out of town?  Consider signing up for the Nonantum Resort's special Halloween weekend lodging package that includes our All Souls' Walk.)

Made possible in part by a grant from the Virginia Hodgkins Somers Foundation.
Take Me Out to a Ballgame
Jack Coombs autographed baseball

In a few weeks, the 2007 major league baseball season will be over and the World Series decided.  Here's a way to extend the baseball season for one more Saturday: come take in the Kennebunk's Big Leaguers exhibition at the Museum! A further enticement to "round the bases" and learn about the Coombs boys in our exhibition, Coombs family relatives will be on hand on Saturday, November 3 from 11AM to 1PM to give informal tours of the exhibition, reminisce, and answer your questions.  This is nostalgia for America's favorite pastime at its finest!

The Brick Store Museum is located at 117 Main Street in the heart of Kennebunk's National Register Historic District. For more than 70 years, the Museum has been dedicated to preserving the Kennebunks' rich cultural and artistic heritage. Its galleries and research archives are open year-round (closed holidays), Tuesdays-Fridays, 10-4:30 and Saturdays, 10-1. Admission is by donation; suggested $5/person. For more information, check us out at www.brickstoremuseum.org, or give us a call at 207.985.4802.
