Entering into these final months of 2006 we have several activities to tell you about. Read on...we're sure there's something for everyone! We also want to take this opportunity to thank all who have been giving so generously of their time and charitable contributions in support of the Museum and to encourage our readers to consider a year-end donation to our Annual Fund and our Connecting Generations Capital Campaign. In honor of our 70th anniversary year, we've set the Annual Fund goal for 2006 at $70,000 (and have about 43% left to raise before Dec. 31st). It's this Annual Fund that literally fuels not only our furnaces but also our imaginations. There's an immediacy to the Annual Fund, since it's our largest resource for keeping the Museum going strong day to day, giving life to our exhibitions and programs, and making us a place that responds to your interests and welcomes your returns. Separately but at the same time, our Connecting Generations Capital Campaign is well underway. With its public launch only four months ago, we're pleased to announce that we have just crested the halfway mark toward our $1.5 million goal! The scope and complexity of this ambitious Capital Campaign exceed the capabilities of our Annual Fund, because with the Campaign we are seeking to make comprehensive structural repairs to our ailing 19th-century buildings and to endow professional staff positions and initiatives. Together, the Annual Fund and the Capital Campaign work toward ensuring the Museum's bright future in the short term and in the decades to come. We appreciate your continuing support and hope you'll consider a contribution. The Museum makes a difference in your life, and in turn, you really can make a difference in the life of the Museum. ![]() Sincerely, The Brick Store Museum
Only 17 days remain to see Camp Maine: Rustic Furniture & Accessories, 1860-1940, the wildly popular exhibition that has drawn the likes of Bill Green and has even landed us in the November 2006 issue of Architectural Digest (yes, that really is us on page 244!). Don't miss out...the exhibition closes on November 18!
Meet at River Tree Center for the Arts, at noon on November 9th for a "curators' choice" guided tour of the new exhibition, Historic Prints of the Kennebunks. The show--organized at River Tree as part of The Maine Print Project--presents an illustrated timeline of the rich history of printmaking in the Kennebunks and includes copies of several items from The Brick Store Museum's collections. Especially for friends of The Brick Store Museum, guest curators Jerome and Monique Collins of Kennebunkport are presenting an informative gallery talk and having autographed copies of the exhibition catalogue available for purchase ($16.95 + tax). Light refreshments will be served. This event is offered free of charge; an RSVP is requested but not required.
Inspired by the Museum's furniture and decorative arts collections, we're pleased to introduce a new one-day workshop for participants ages 7 to 107! Old, New & Faux: Furniture and Finishes through the Years takes place on Saturday, November 18 from 9:45 AM to 3 PM and is sponsored by The Virginia Hodgkins Somers Foundation. Pre- registration is required by November 10th. You'll start the day in our galleries exploring the features of various furniture styles and learning how to detect an antique from a reproduction. You'll then begin assembling and painting a beautiful pine bench like the one you see here. In between applying coats of traditional milk paint and using different techniques to give it a vintage finish, you'll be treated to special demonstrations by some of the region's finest experts.
Enjoy the holiday shopping season and show your support for The Brick Store Museum! We are once again privileged to participate in the Festival of Giving, a special night of shopping and entertainment on Sunday, November 19 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM at The Maine Mall in South Portland.
Give us a call at 207-985-4802 or come on by the Museum to secure your advance tickets and get a jump on your holiday shopping.
Just in time for the holidays, this new event is sure to be a hit and get you into the spirit of the season. Businesses, artists, and creative community members are donating charmingly-decorated wreaths for a silent auction, with proceeds to benefit the Museum. Here's your chance to pick up beautiful decor you won't find anywhere else! Come enjoy the displays and place your bid(s) anytime during the Museum's regular open hours, or during our special hours on November 26 (3 to 5 PM)- -right before the downtown Kennebunk Tree Lighting Ceremony and festivities--and November 30 (until 7 PM).
Grandparents, parents, and children are invited for a rare peek inside the 1862 Captain Moses Maling House--a new venue!--for the Museum's third annual Holiday Tea, from 3 to 5 PM on Sunday, December 10th. Enjoy a sumptuous afternoon tea while learning a bit about tea and etiquette customs, and the history of this beautifully decorated, historic Italianate mansion on Summer Street that is today a private residence. Advance reservations are required by December 2nd. Cost is $15/adult and $7.50/child up to high school age ($12/adult and $6/child for Museum members). Children under 4 years old admitted free.
