Brick Store Museum Happenings

Exploring the Wonders of History and ArtMay 2010
Museum collage
Spring has most definitely sprung here in Kennebunk, and with it, all sorts of things are "blossoming" at the Museum.

Our first ever "Vines in the Vaults" event at the end of April was not only a sell-out success but also a rollicking good time! With sunny skies, the downtown May Day celebration drew more than 260 children and parents into the Museum to make May baskets.  And in just the last couple of weeks we've transformed our galleries once again to host a stunning exhibition by some of the nation's best pastel painters. Read on for all that's new and exciting!

Sincerely,
The Brick Store Museum
Saluting Our Military Families

Blue Star Museums This summer, we're among more than 600 museums in the country--and currently just two in Maine!--offering free admission to active duty military personnel and their families through the Blue Star Museums initiative, a partnership among the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, and museums across America.

The free admission program is available from Memorial Day through Labor Day 2010 to active duty military personnel and their families (military ID holder and five immediate family members), which includes Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard and active duty Reserve and National Guard. CLICK HERE for full details, a list of participating institutions nationwide, and a map to help with visit planning. Since World War I, the Blue Star designation has referred to families with a member who is serving active duty during a time of combat.

We at the Brick Store Museum salute our country's military personnel past and present and are honored to be part of this program as a way of showing our appreciation.

For Pastels Only
2010 Best in Show: Night Work IV, by Tim Gaydos
Best in Show: Night Work IV, by Tim Gaydos
Organized by The Pastel Painters of Maine (PPOM), this 11th international juried exhibition and sale displays the works of pastel artists from the United States and Canada.

Winnowed from an initial 228 entries, with celebrated artist Frank Federico as the juror of selection, For Pastels Only ultimately features 59 works by 52 artists representing 13 states and Canada. Criteria for submissions dictated that works must be original soft pastels in any subject or style, no larger than 45" x 45" framed.  Bill Creevy, PSA Master Pastelist and author of The Pastel Book, served as the juror of awards, allocating more than $5,000 in artists' prizes at last Saturday's well-attended opening festivities at the Museum.

Of course, the best way to experience For Pastels Only is to come see it in person, but if you can't make it to the Museum before the show closes on June 12, catch it online as our newest virtual exhibition offering.

The show is open to the public during regular museum hours: Tuesdays-Fridays, 10AM-4:30PM and Saturdays, 10AM-1PM with a suggested admission donation of $5/person.

You're sure to be impressed by the wide-ranging styles and subjects--from still lifes and portraiture to landscapes in every season.
Goodbye, Garden Street Market
The closing of Kennebunk's Garden Street Market on May 7, 2010, offered the opportunity for the Museum to collect memorabilia related to the market's 14-year history, not only as a locally-owned grocery store but also as a community-minded neighbor and anchor to the Main Street business corridor.

The disappearance of Garden Street Market concludes a 50-year era of the property's continuous use as the town's "bread basket." Our new History Showcase, "Goodbye, Garden Street Market" (shown here with market owner Dan Bowen) features the newest additions to the Museum's permanent collections, demonstrating that history is indeed being made each and every day. This History Showcase was made possible by our business partners: Ocean Bank, Captain Jefferds Inn, Captain Lord Mansion, Kennebunk Savings, and Tom's of Maine.

In this issue, we're talking about oil paintings. This month's tip comes from art conservator Neil Crandall, who gave a public program at
the Museum  earlier this month. He cautions art collectors never to clean their oil paintings with linseed oil.  While you may think that linseed oil freshens up the colors on the canvas, resist the urge! Over time, linseed oil converts to an invasive, gummy yellow residue which is very difficult and costly to remove!

 Did You Know...

Membership garden full of tulips!

...that April showers bring May flowers?  Okay, so you've probably heard that one before.  But did you know that April  showers brought OUR May flowers?  It's true! The nearly 300 tulips we planted last autumn as part of our "Help our Membership GROW" initiative bloomed into a riot of color earlier this month. Each bulb represents a new or returning member household from 2009...what a sight!
