Brick Store Museum Happenings

Exploring the Wonders of History May 2009

Collage blockHooray for May at the Museum!  We started off the month with more than 220 people visiting and making May baskets as part of downtown Kennebunk's May Day celebrations. May is also National Preservation Month, and our own little corner of the historic district is looking good! Spring has sprung, the huge lilac bushes in our courtyard are now in bloom, and our Gardens Committee volunteers have just added beautiful flowers and greenery to our Main Street planters. In recently unboarding a few windows, our construction crews have completely transformed some of our interior spaces, and they are now finishing the very last of the structural work in our attics and on the exterior. With Memorial Day Weekend fast upon us, we're gearing up for an inspiring concert with Monica Grabin (see below) and installing what will soon be a colorful new exhibition featuring quilts from the Museum's collections.  We hope to see you!

Sincerely,
The Brick Store Museum
Put the "Memorial" in your Memorial Day Weekend

Monica Grabin concertSaturday, May 23rd at 7PM in the Museum's Program Center at 4 Dane St., Kennebunk

Well-known musician Monica Grabin joins forces with us once again to present a free, public concert in honor of Memorial Day weekend. Grabin's Over Here and 'Over There!': Songs & Images from the Great War stirringly traces American history in the World War I era through song, setting her signature folk music against a multimedia backdrop of imagery from our very own collection of World War I recruitment and morale posters--said to be the most extensive in the State of Maine. The performance is offered at no charge, with donations welcomed!

We first presented this concert last year at Veterans' Day to a packed house and very enthusiastic feedback. This encore, expanded performance will include a display of the actual posters, which are even more dramatic in person. For those who want to see the show again, Grabin has promised that there'll be new material to keep things fresh. And for those who missed it the first time around, NOW is your chance!

Arts in the Inns 2009 (June 3-7) pairs palates with palettes and celebrates fine food, fine wine, fine art, and fine living. This 5th annual jubilee showcases art in many mediums, from watercolor to sculpture, from culinary arts to the art of innkeeping. It all begins with signature dinners with artists and private chefs, proceeds to a Champagne Preview, then moves on to an all-new Grand Tasting...plus a Twilight Soiree, artists in residence showings, a Plein Air Invitational, and inns tours!

Simply put, this fabulous weekend is a feast for all the senses.

Better still, when purchasing your tickets for any of these fabulous events, simply note that you heard about it through the Brick Store Museum, and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to benefit the museum!

The Nation's Guest: Lafayette's 1825 Visit to Kennebunk

The Nation's Guest
In 1824 and 1825, the aging American Revolutionary War hero General Lafayette made a farewell tour of the United States as "the nation's guest." His 13-month journey included an afternoon stopover in Kennebunk, Maine, in June of 1825. In our newest History Showcase display, see the artifacts and archival materials that tell what transpired that afternoon and learn about the long-term impact Lafayette's three-hour visit would have on the community.

This latest installment of The History Showcase is made possible by the following proud business partners: Ocean Bank, and Captain Jefferds Inn, and Captain Lord Mansion.

Thank you, Business Partners!

This month we're pleased to welcome back Captain Jefferds Inn and Kennebunk Veterinary Hospital as Business Partners renewing their commitment for 2009-2010 in support of the Museum. We're also thrilled to announce two all-new partners in Atria Kennebunk and Savings Bank of Maine-Kennebunk. An Appeal by board president

The collage above depicts the historical buildings comprising the Brick Store Museum that has long anchored our picturesque downtown. I have fond childhood memories of the museum, and it's a place that remains important to me and my wife now that we have children of our own.

If you've driven by or visited over the past six months, you've seen first-hand that the museum has undergone basement-to-attic structural renovations that have literally strengthened this venerable institution for the years to come.

...that in 1963, Kennebunk became the first town in Maine to establish an historic district?  Ours includes 5750 acres and 146 buildings with fine examples of Colonial, Federal, Greek Revival, Italianate, Queen Anne and Colonial Revival architecture. In 1974, the Kennebunk Historic District was recognized as a National Register Historic District.  To commemorate the 35th anniversary of this designation, the Museum will be mounting a special landmarks exhibition later this summer.
