It's difficult to believe that Memorial Day is almost upon us already. Do note that we'll be closed for the long holiday weekend, but rest assured that we have plenty going on in the coming weeks!
Our spring sale continues into June, so stop by for sweet deals on selected museum shop merchandise, plus copies of archival photographs and graphics used in past exhibitions. While you're in, purchase a few raffle tickets ($1 each; 6 for $5; or 25 for $20) for prize drawings to be held in conjunction with our Golf Tournament Dinner on June 2 (you need not be present to win). We're also hard at work on three brand new exhibitions, so our galleries are ever-changing. Finally, current museum members should have received their invitations in the mail to our 68th Annual Members' Meeting on June 17. Here's to a full summer ahead!
Sincerely,
The Brick Store Museum

FACES Exhibit Goes "Virtual"
Breaking news! If you weren't among the more than 1,140 people who visited the Faces of the Kennebunks exhibition in person this winter, you still have a chance to see it...online, that is! Due to the popularity of Faces and sustained interest in all the portrait subjects, we have converted the show into a virtual exhibition that you can visit simply by going to our website. Check out our newest online exhibition by CLICKING HERE!
News of the exhibition has certainly spread: for example, Liam Crotty's photograph of musician Mac McHale is now hanging in the International Bluegrass Music Museum in Owensboro, Kentucky! |

History Showcase: Fanfare for Summer

Our "History Showcase" initiative at the Museum offers changing mini-exhibitions throughout the year--an innovative way of highlighting special collections and/or recent acquisitions and ensuring that returning visitors are always seeing something unique!
This latest installment of "The History Showcase" celebrates the arrival of warmer weather. Fanfare for Summer presents fifteen decorative fans from around the world, dating back more than two centuries. These unique fans are patriotic, colorful, commemorative, feathered, and bedazzled; don't miss your chance to see the fans and learn about their history as breeze makers, fashion accessories, and secret signalers. The History Showcase is made possible by the Museum's proud business partners: Captain Lord Mansion and Ocean Bank. |

On the Move
At the end of April, a crew of very capable volunteers under the direction of our registrar Kathryn Hussey began meticulously inventorying and packing literally hundreds of pieces of china, glassware, and fine arts. The entire collections housed in the Museum's 1814 building (the one at the corner of Main and Dane Streets) will be temporarily moving into offsite storage in anticipation of much-needed structural work on the sills and framing--all identified as part of the Museum's Connecting Generations Capital Campaign. Watch this space for future updates! Special thanks to Kathryn Hussey, Jean Eckland, Bev Lynch, Natalie Richdale and Emily Shafer for their incredible efforts to date...no small task! |

On the Trail of Folk Art
See Brick Store Museum artifacts on display in Saco! The Saco Museum is one of 11 museums throughout Maine simultaneously exhibiting folk art collections as part of the 2008 Maine Folk Art Trail, a coordinated statewide exhibition. In addition to exhibiting items from its own collections, Saco Museum has borrowed several artifacts from the Brick Store Museum, including two weathervanes, a child's chair, two painted tin teapots, an exquisite rocking horse, a pair of toy wooden oxen, and a large wooden Grand Army of the Republic sign that once hung in downtown Kennebunk. The Saco Museum's contribution to the Maine Folk Art Trail will remain on view through September 28, 2008.

Record Turnout for May Day at the Museum
Even though Downtown Kennebunk's 10th Annual May Day Celebration on May 3 was a little rainy, it certainly didn't dampen anyone's spirits OR the turnout at the Museum. A total of 330 people visited the Museum in 3 hours to make May baskets, take behind-the-scenes tours, and catch the last day of the Faces of the Kennebunks exhibition being on public view.

Inside Spotlight...
"Life of a Volunteer"
by Museum volunteer Richard Carr

"Right now my project as a volunteer at The Brick Store Museum is in the Archives Center looking through issues of the Eastern Star weekly newspaper (an ancestor of our York County Coast Star) from the year 1919. By chance, 1919 is also my birth year, which entitles me to the title, "Old Geezer."
The purpose of my scanning through the Star is. . .
