Hello! Thanks to all who visited on May Day for Fleurs & Tours. It was literally the last sunny day we saw for weeks, and those that came were treated to great museum tours, beautiful spring flowers and a fun time making May baskets. Now that summer is almost upon us, it seems there's more going on than ever. Read on for the latest and greatest! We hope to see you again soon. ![]() Sincerely, The Brick Store Museum
Calling all kids, parents and grandparents! Our kids' programs have been so popular that parents were asking when they could join in the fun. So, we're pleased to announce a new, one-day intergenerational program (ages 7 to 107!) to take place on June 10 from 9 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.: Shipbuilding Odyssey. We'll be focusing on the shipbuilding heritage of the Kennebunks through a variety of hands-on activities. Our day will begin at the Museum with Captain Rich Woodman learning about life in the Kennebunks’ 19th- century shipyards and what it took to build the vessels that eventually sailed trade routes spanning the globe. You’ll then set out to create and rig your very own Kennebunk-built wooden vessel. In our “test pool,” you’ll experiment with your design and the placement of ballast to create a seaworthy vessel. Over lunch, we’ll sing traditional sea shanties with concertina player Rich Gaito and then board a special trolley for an afternoon excursion to various historical locales associated with shipbuilding along the Kennebunk River. The day culminates in Kennebunkport with a trial launching of your vessel before returning to the Museum. And best of all...you get to take home your vessel as a keepsake of the day! Space is limited; registration is on a first-come, first- served basis; due by June 3. Registration is $25 per adult/child pair ($20 for Museum members). This program is the second in a series of four educational outreach programs for 2006 to be generously sponsored by The Virginia Hodgkins Somers Foundation.
New Exhibition Now Open! Camp Maine: Rustic Furniture & Accessories, 1860- 1940 opened on May 27 to rave reviews. The exhibition remains on view through November 18 with regular hours, Tuesdays- Fridays, 10-4:30 and Saturdays 10-1. More than 200 pieces--some of the finest in or out of any museum--conjure up the simplicity, whimsy and nostalgia of classic woodland retreats. Highlights include a 17-foot 1920s canoe, an early Mt. Washington rescue sled, vintage signage, fishing lures and delicate bentwood furniture. Set against the scent of balsam fir, the sound of a lapping brook, and the glow of a campfire, this is one exhibition you don't want to miss! And if you think you'll like the exhibition, then you're going to love all the exhibition-related programming. Click HERE for details!
With our 70th anniversary well underway, you many have already viewed our Then & Now exhibition this winter, taken a special behind-the- scenes tour as part of our May Day Fleurs & Tours event, or known or child who participated in our February Sailors’ Valentine workshop made possible by a grant from The Virginia Hodgkins Somers Foundation. Or perhaps—like us—you’re eagerly awaiting our newest exhibitions and associated programs, plus our official 70th anniversary celebration on July 1. All these day-to-day operations and activities are substantial undertakings sustained by your generosity, along with grants, corporate giving and charitable donations. Won’t you show your commitment by helping our 2006 Annual Fund exceed $70,000 for our 70th anniversary?
Did you know that each year more than 120 different volunteers give generously of their time and talents in support of the Museum's mission and operations? While some volunteer on a regular basis each week, others come for specific events or activities. At this time of year, we're especially looking for volunteers in the following arenas:
