Brick Store Museum Happenings

Exploring the Wonders of History March 2009

Collage blockLet us be the very first to wish you a "Happy Spring!" Our Preservation Station expo will be here before you know it (see below, and mark your calendars for April 11th), and from there it won't be long before you'll be celebrating May Day at the Museum, enjoying a new "History Showcase," attending our May concert with Monica Grabin, playing in our Spring Classic golf tournament, seeing the completion of our renovations, and eagerly anticipating exhibitions involving quilts, trolleys, vintage postcards, and the 35th anniversary of our historic district.  Suffice it to say, we have some great things coming your way, so plan on making the Museum part of your Spring!

Sincerely,
The Brick Store Museum
Sat., April 11th, 10AM - 2 PM:  Preservation Station!

Preservation Station!
With the Museum's own buildings preservation project closing in on completion, we figured it'd be a grand time to shine the spotlight on caring for treasures.

Are YOU interested in... restoring an oil painting? caring for stringed instruments? conserving upholstered furniture? how best to store old documents? re-caning a chair? preserving historic textiles like quilts, embroidery, and wedding gowns for future generations? bringing faded or damaged photos back to life? matting and framing artworks so they will last? rewiring antique lighting? making digital transfers of old media like vinyl records and reel-to-reel home movies? reglazing old windows? where to use old parts in a new house? how much to sand old floorboards?

For one day only, the Museum's galleries will be transformed into PRESERVATION STATION, an expo of specialists with advice and services for preserving your collections and family treasures. Come with questions, leave with solutions. Your heirlooms are worth preserving...and just may end up in a museum someday!

Participants include Aikman Design; Kevin Byron Photography; Great Works Painting Restoration; Melissa McDougald Conservation & Restoration of Upholstered Furniture; Museum Textile Services; The Old House Parts Company;  The Photo Doctor; Red House Custom Picture Framing; Tune Town; Ann Van Deusen Chair Caning; Victorian Lighting, Inc.; and Video Creations.

Admission to Preservation Station of $5/person includes access to all the experts, plus to all the Museum's current exhibitions.  Don't miss out!

Now on Display: Renovations Revealed!

Renovations Revealed! icon

Renovations Revealed, our newest exhibit, presents the nearly 200-year history of the museum's buildings and invites you to explore their recent structural renovations through artifacts, more than 40 construction photos, materials...and the very buildings themselves! Out of the basements, through the walls and into the attics, you'll discover what powderpost beetles can do, how nails are made, and why there are now three steel beams in our buildings. Finally, in a section on "Basement Archaeology," see a number of items--from an early light bulb to an unique patent medicine bottle--uncovered by the construction crews.
Won't you be a Business Partner?
Business Partner Program brochure

It's almost April and therefore the time for Business Partner Program renewals. We're incredibly grateful to all 29 of our 2008-2009 partners. Their generosity has made all the difference in our changing "History Showcases," exhibitions and programming, the monthly e-newsletters, and more. Take a moment to let them know you noticed, and thank them for their community-mindedness!

We look forward to continuing these relationships and hope others will join our growing Business Partner Program for 2009-2010.  The support of our Business Partners has never meant more or been more critical to our operations.

That said, we're delighted to welcome back Ocean Bank, leading the way by example by already committing its support for the Museum this year.  Thank you!

Update on Renovations

Folks of all ages "left their mark on history."Approximately 100 visitors "left their marks on history" at our beam-signing event on March 7. With a sneak peek at all the renovations underway, there were many oohs and ahhs and lots of positive comments!  Come on in and see for yourself.

Crews are now hard at work on the structural framing in our end building, the one situated at the corner of Main and Dane Streets. Many of you know this as our Archives Center and home to thousands of manuscripts, maps, ledgers, historical photographs, and books. Researcher access to the Archives has been suspended for just a couple weeks total, while carpenters replace a header beam and make modifications to the ceiling; the Archives should be back online to visitors in early April.

Be sure to check out our homepage with the updated slideshow of the renovations (including photos of the flooring, chimney work, and transformation of the Archives).
The Brick Store Museum is located at 117 Main Street in the heart of Kennebunk's National Register Historic District. For more than 70 years, the Museum has been dedicated to preserving the Kennebunks' rich cultural and artistic heritage. Its galleries and research archives are open year-round (closed holidays), Tuesdays-Fridays, 10-4:30 and Saturdays, 10-1. Admission is by donation; suggested $5/person. For more information, check us out at www.brickstoremuseum.org, or give us a call at 207.985.4802.
