Greetings! What do behind-the-scenes tours, May baskets, flower sales, and golf tournaments have in common? They're all signs that spring is just around the corner at The Brick Store Museum. We're coming off record attendance in February (up an average of 63% over the past two Februarys' totals!) thanks in large part to the popularity of the Then & Now exhibition. In next month's e- newsletter, we'll be introducing some new features, letting you in on what our next exhibition will be, and announcing some more new programs...so stay connected with The Brick Store Museum! ![]() Sincerely, The Brick Store Museum
Kennebunk Savings Bank has included The Brick Store Museum on the Bank's 2006 Community Investment Ballot, which is being mailed to customers along with February bank statements and in separate special mailings to Kennebunk Financial Services and Morris Insurance customers. Each year, a significant portion of funds from this program is donated to organizations, based on customers' votes. In 2005, the Bank and its Foundation received over 5,000 votes and provided $140,000 (roughly $27.50 per vote!) to York County non-profits and charitable organizations. If you're a Kennebunk Savings Bank customer, we encourage you to cast your vote for The Brick Store Museum. Last year the Museum was awarded a grant of $1952.50 through the ballot initiative. So, with thanks to everyone who voted for us in 2005, we urge you to participate again in 2006, knowing that each vote allows us to continue delivering the quality programs and exhibitions you've come to know and love. Thank you!
Catch the final days of The Brick Store Museum and Kennebunk Free Library's Then & Now: exhibition, curated by Kathy Ostrander and generously sponsored by Downing Real Estate Agency. This exhibition remains on display only through March 18--so don't miss out! Learn about 19th-century Kennebunk photographer Albion Moody in the lobby display at the Library, and view more than 150 "then-and-now" image pairings at the Museum. Museum hours are Tuesdays through Fridays, 10 AM - 4:30 PM and Saturdays, 10 AM - 1 PM. If you see vintage images you like, reprints can be ordered (see below)...they make perfect keepsakes and gifts!
The second in a series of three White Glove Seminars continues on March 22 at 2 PM with a session on blue-and-white china. Using examples from the Museum’s large collection of ceramics, former director and curator Sandra Armentrout and Museum registrar Kathryn Hussey will discuss the evolution of blue-and- white wares from the earliest Chinese and Japanese pieces to European and American examples. Many old favorites of collectors, such as Chinese Export, Japanese Imari, Delft, Staffordshire wares, and the popular “Flo Blue” and “Blue Willow” wares will be available for examination. You're encouraged to bring an example from your own collection or from everyday use to demonstrate how the passion for blue-and-white wares continues. The program is free, but please email or call the Museum at 985.4802 to pre-register. Spaces are filling up quickly!
When Kennebunk's annual May Day Celebration takes place on Main Street on Saturday, May 6th, the Museum will be joining in the family fun--rain or shine--by offering our very own FLEURS & TOURS, featuring:
Stay tuned for all the details. Volunteers are needed to help with the Museum's activities, so please give us a call at 985.4802 or send us an email if you're willing to lend a hand.
Enjoy an afternoon of golf and camaraderie at Webhannet Golf Club for the Museum’s 9th Annual Golf Tournament, to be held on Monday, June 5th with a shotgun start at 1 PM. There'll be prizes for the golfers, and a raffle, silent auction and fabled post-tournament social hour and catered dinner for golfers and non-golfers alike. Don't miss the Museum's largest annual fundraising event. Last year's tournament generated more than $15,000, with the proceeds benefiting the Museums exhibitions, educational outreach activities and preservation initiatives. We hope you'll join us!
WEAR IT! The attractive design of this all- new, 100% white cotton infant creeper derives from the logo of The Brick Store Museum's acclaimed 2004 exhibition, Made in Kennebunk, about the history of manufacturing along Kennebunk's Mousam River. The reverse of the shirt reads, "The Brick Store Museum, Kennebunk, Maine, Est. 1936" in whimsical black lettering resembling alphabet soup. Choose from sizes for 6- to 24-month-olds, or select an infant t-shirt instead. With the Museum as a newly-approved member of the Zazzle Community Giving Program, 20% or more of each sale comes directly to us, benefiting our mission and representing an innovative new fundraising avenue!
