Brick Store Museum Happenings

Exploring the Wonder of History June 2007
Museum collage blockHello! It's been a "wild" time at the Museum these days.  Not only it is busy for us with our Annual Fund appeal, ongoing Capital Campaign, continuing restoration work, grant deadlines, and upcoming 67th annual Members' Meeting, but we're also gearing up for our Wild Things exhibition opening next week.  Read on for these details and more! We look forward to seeing you soon!

Sincerely,
The Brick Store Museum
Wild Things Exhibition to Open June 21
Wild Things poster Elk, bear, fish, frogs, birds, and more!  It's all coming to the Museum when Wild Things: Selections from Kate Manko's Collection of American Folk Art Animals opens on June 21.  Nearly 100 folk art animals take over part of our gallery space for the remainder of the year for this fresh and fanciful look at folk art and the art of collecting.

Join us for our family-friendly opening reception on Thursday, June 21, 4:30-7:30 PM.  In keeping with the critter theme, we'll be serving animal crackers, Teddy grahams, goldfish crackers, moose munch, and "bug juice"...and some other fare too!

Exhibition made possible in part by our proud Business Partner: Captain Lord Mansion

Storytelling by the OtterBears
image copyright 2003, OtterBear Studio Families and children are invited to a very special evening of storytelling at the Museum on Friday, June 22 at 6:30 PMAll the way from the state of Washington, master carvers and storytellers, Augustus and Nakwesee of OtterBear Studio, will lead a storytelling session featuring traditional tales of the Kwakwaka'wakw people of the Pacific Northwest and their own contemporary children's book, Saving the Salmon. This program ties in with the Museum's new Wild Things exhibition and is offered to the public at no charge, though donations are gratefully accepted.

If you can't catch the storytelling, the OtterBears will be also artists in residence on Saturday, June 23 and Sunday, June 24 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day at Home & Away Gallery in Kennebunkport. They will be showcasing their exquisite Northwest Coast-style jewelry and carvings made from such disparate natural materials as fossilized tusk, ebony, and abalone shell. As a special addition, they will perform the native dances of Grandmother Loon and Angry Bear--complete with hand-carved masks--at  Home & Away Gallery on Saturday at 5 pm. A reception will follow. The weekend's activities at Home & Away are open to the public at no charge. Seating is limited for the dance performance, however, so please RSVP for the native dance event to Home & Away Gallery at 207.967.2122.
History Camp: Going "Wild"

snowy owl from Kate Manko's collection of folk art animalsThis year's History Camp on Saturday, July 14 for kids ages 8 to 12 will complement our Wild Things exhibition of folk art animals.

Inspired by the nearly 100 carved pieces in the exhibition, kids can try their hands at painting an articulated, toy snake and fish in the folk art tradition. They'll also learn to identify the tracks made by Maine wildlife and create a casting of an animal print as a keepsake. Finally, they'll let their imaginations run wild in crafting a "stuffed fish." All projects will be displayed at the end of the day for everyone to enjoy. Best of all, kids get to take home everything they made as mementos of the day!

Space is limited. Pre-registration and payment are required no later than July 7.  CLICK HERE to download and print the registration form with all the details (PDF format) or call the Museum at 207.985.4802.

Made possible with support from the Virginia Hodgkins Somers Foundation.
Golf Tournament Rescheduled due to Rainout
10th annual golf tournament Anyone caught in the downpours on June 4 knew that our 10th annual golf tournament originally slated for that date was just not meant to be:  it was a complete washout with the course at Webhannet closed due to standing water on the greens. Certainly a day better suited for ducks than for golfers!

The GREAT news is that we've been able to reschedule, and our NEW tournament date is set for Monday, September 17 at 1 PM.  We're saving up all our generous sponsorships and fabulous prizes for our new date.  We also welcome any additional players, teams or sponsors that wish to join us in the fun.   Simply CLICK HERE for all the details.

Note to existing players/teams who were signed up for June 4:  Kindly reconfirm your participation for September 17 by calling the Museum at 207.985.4802.

In the year 1825, when many Maine structures were built of wood, prominent Kennebunk merchant William Lord used locally kilned brick to build his distinctive store on Main Street.  That building, which today houses The Brick Store Museum that was founded by his great-granddaughter over a century later, still stands and anchors our village's landscape, providing cultural continuity that spans the generations.
