  • Summer Greetings!

Just a quick update on our recent happenings. We think you'll agree that there is a lot going on these days, and we've loved having your presence and support in our various activities!

Be sure to mark your calendars for the Museum's 70th anniversary community celebration on July 1st, 10 am-2 pm. It's an event so big you'll be getting a notice about it separately!

As you may have heard, the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives have officially named 2006 as the Year of the Museum to honor the American Association of Museums' centennial. In special recognition of the Year of the Museum, the Boston Red Sox have agreed to feature a different New England museum on the Fenway Park scoreboard during each of the 81 home games this season...

And we just received confirmation that we will be one of the museums highlighted! The scoreboard message will read: In celebration of the "Year of the Museum", we invite fans to learn more about The Brick Store Museum in Kennebunk, Maine. www.brickstoremuseum.org

Unfortunately, we don't know exactly when "our" day will be, since the Red Sox ultimately decide on the posting date...so keep watching, and GO SOX! We're thrilled by this publicity and hope it serves as a reminder of the value that museums provide to our civic and cultural lives.

Make Tracks to Maine Camp Exhibition
Camp Maine: Rustic Furniture & Accessories, 1860-1940

Now open to rave reviews! More than 250 historical pieces--some of the finest in or out of any museum--conjure up the simplicity, whimsy and nostalgia of classic woodland retreats. The scent of balsam fir, the sound of a lapping brook, the glow of a campfire. This is one exhibition you don't want to miss.

What's more...you might just catch a glimpse of the Museum and this exhibition on the 6/17 episode of NECN's T.V. Diner--a camera crew was in on May 31st to do some filming at the Museum!

    History Camp: Cabin Fever!
    History Camp: Cabin Fever!

Calling all kids, ages 8 to 12! Join us on Saturday, July 15 for History Camp: Cabin Fever! To tie in with our seasonal exhibition, Camp Maine: Rustic Furniture & Accessories, 1860- 1940, our 3rd annual History Camp will center on activities associated with the classic Maine camps—from building and painting miniature log cabins to tying giant-sized fly fishing lures and making balsam fir sachets and twig signs. Prior to taking their projects home for lasting memories of the day, the children display them for the general public to see. Pre-registration is required by July 8. Cost is $30 per camper ($25 per camper for Museum members).

This program is the third in a series of four educational outreach programs for 2006 to be generously sponsored by The Virginia Hodgkins Somers Foundation.

    Name that Moose!
    Name this moose!

There once was a moose-not on the loose-but on the wall in The Brick Store Museum. He's BIG, stately and made out of wood...and placed right where all can see him.

He's a current favorite in our Maine camp exhibition. Visitors come up to him with no inhibition! He's four feet wide at his antlers' ends and just hanging around to make new friends.

We think that our moose deserves a good name. So come up with the best, and enjoy your 15 minutes of fame!

    And the Winners Are...
    award

It's time to salute some winners in several recent Brick Store Museum-sponsored activities:

    • Each year the Museum honors two graduating Kennebunk High School seniors at the school's Awards' Night. This year's honorees were Stephanie Sluyter for the Joyce Butler Book Award for excellence in history and Kristen Sweeney for the Edith Cleaves Barry book award for excellence in the arts. Best wishes to these well-deserving seniors!
    • For more than 30 years, the Museum has hosted a bridge marathon where teams play 8 rounds of bridge from September to May. At the final round and awards luncheon at the Nonantum Resort in May, Nancy Spooner and Randy Wilbert took top honors for the overall best score. Interested in participating in the 2006-2007 bridge marathon? Contact us or watch for the notice in an upcoming e-newsletter.
    • We lucked out with no rain for our 9th annual golf tournament. Special thanks to all our players, sponsors and event donors. Special congratulations to the team of Bob Arena, Brian MacDonald, Tom Nill and Rick Wolf for turning in the best net score of 52.
