100 Years at the Beach Now on View

100 Years at the Beach2010 marks the 100th anniversary of the Kennebunk Beach Improvement Association (KBIA). Our newest History Showcase exhibition, 100 Years at the Beach, traces the organization from its roots as the environmental steward of Mother's Beach and The Cove to its role in providing educational enrichment opportunities to children and their families. Take yourself back to the early 1900s, when "beach improvements" meant oiling the dirt road, adding streetlights, and acquiring a life boat to ensure safety at the bathing beach. Through a 1930s beach scene (complete with a beach umbrella and a woolen bathing suit!), 15-foot sail, and a series of photographs, archival materials and artifacts both from the Museum's collections and on loan from KBIA, see what attracted the earliest summer residents and what traditions and allure remain to this day.

This exhibition is on view through September 14 and is made possible by our proud business partner, Cape Arundel Inn.
In the Maine Stream Opens to Public on August 7th

In the Maine Stream Featuring the Museum's own circa 1899 Wabanaki birchbark canoe and an array of vintage paddles and oars on loan from the private collection of Kate Manko, In the Maine Stream is equal parts history, art, and nostalgia. Reflect upon Kennebunkport's "Indian Village" at the turn of the 20th century, the makings of a birchbark canoe, and the enduring canoeing traditions on the Kennebunk River. Appreciate the utilitarian simplicity of the hand-crafted wooden paddles, many of which are painted in a folk art tradition with scenes, monograms and names conjuring up images of Maine's natural beauty.

This exhibition remains on view through Spring 2011 and is made possible by our proud business partner, Cape Arundel Inn.

New siding on the Program Center

In June our Program Center at 4 Dane Street received some much-needed TLC to repair flashing on the roof and replace clapboards on the carriage stalls. We're also planting new grass in our courtyard where we'd had to do some digging to make improvements to drainage as part of our Capital Campaign construction on our main museum complex.

Kennebunk Shuttle stops at Museum

...that you can get to the Museum aboard a hybrid diesel-electric bus? We're proud to be an advertiser for the Kennebunk Shuttle...look for our billboard on the side!  This particular shuttle route is a seasonal service offered within the Shoreline Explorer Network, operated by York Country Community Action Corporation. The shuttle runs 7 days a week, 10AM-9:30PM, through September 6th. A day pass is just $3, and it's a great way to get around downtown Kennebunk and to Lower Village and the beaches.
Winners All!

The team from Jensen Baird Gardner & Henry (pictured above) took top honors for 1st Net score (Sally Daggett, Bill Dale, Duncan McEachern, and Dan Robinson); the team sponsored by Kennebunk Savings Insurance (Mark Bernstein, Steve Hodsdon, Mike MacKinnon, and David Moravick) won the prize for Best Gross score.

2010 Bridge Marathon winners

Only 440 points separated the top three teams in the Museum's 2009-2010 bridge marathon, but Nancy Spooner and Randy Wilbert (pictured above) finished the season in 1st place and were honored at the awards luncheon in June.
