It's July, and what a summer it's been so far. Our great crew from JD MacDougall, Inc. officially finished the last of the structural renovations to our historic Main Street buildings; painters will be coming soon to spruce up the exteriors. Our 6th annual History Camp last weekend was a great success...just look at the smiles on these kids as they show off their "Portraits, Patchwork & Porticoes"! The first of four Elderhostel groups to be visiting us this year arrived earlier this week. We just opened a fun and nostalgic new exhibition, and it seems we keep adding neat events to our calendar with each passing day. So, what are you waiting for? Come check us out!
Sincerely,

NEW! Mailed from Maine now on view
Greetings of "wish you were here" await each visitor to our newest exhibition, Mailed from Maine: Vintage Postcards of the Kennebunks. Open through early 2010, the show invites you to step back in time and visit the Kennebunks as seen through more than 100 postcards selected from our permanent collections, celebrating the towns of Kennebunk and Kennebunkport and representing all aspects of these communities--from their landmark hotels, to scenic views of the beach, to sights that have since disappeared. A colorful timeline illustrating the development of postcards greets you to the exhibition, offering tips on dating postcards by the details. An interactive game challenges you to test your knowledge of postcard history. You'll see dozens of handwritten postcard messages from the early 1900s and can compare this historical form of "quick" communication with today's "Twitter" phenomenon. You even get an up-close look at several fascinating early 20th-century cameras that produced the kinds of postcards on display. "Wish you were here!"

Meet our Two New Trustees
With the Museum's 69th Annual Members' Meeting last month, we welcomed two new faces to our Board of Trustees and are excited by the enthusiasm, perspectives, and skills they have to offer.
Kathy Graham ( pictured at left) and her husband had been coming to Maine for many years to a camp on a lake. They moved to Harpswell, Maine, in 2001, and Kathy was part of the docent program at the Portland Museum of Art. She was the director of a nursery school in East Hampton, New York, before moving to Maine and soon opened a nursery school in Harpswell as well. Her father always worked as a museum director, and Kathy was inspired by his energy in creating programs to bring the community into the world of art. Kathy and her husband moved to Wells, Maine, last year. She is pleased at the opportunity to serve on the Board and has already gotten involved with the Museum's Education Committee and helped with our recent History Camp.
Janet Wolf ( pictured at right) moved to Kennebunkport in 1999, when she and her husband purchased an inn. Janet immediately joined the Museum and pitched in as a volunteer wherever and whenever needed--from conducting walking tours to helping with events and numerous educational programs. Janet has a background in theater and dance and performed and taught ballet for many years. Before becoming an innkeeper, she was the director of the primary fund raising event at a private school in Connecticut. Janet and her husband are currently partners in The B&B Team, a firm that provides brokerage and consulting services to the small lodging industry nationally. |

...that Systematics, Inc. just installed several units of state-of-the-art, powder-coated steel shelving at the Museum as an in-kind gift? With the Museum's collections storage areas undergoing a structural overhaul courtesy of the recent Capital Campaign, museum staff viewed the shelving truly as the "icing on the cake." The collections benefiting from Systematics' generosity include sculpture, china, glassware, and several items of early American furniture. Thank you, Systematics! |
