Brick Store Museum Happenings

Exploring the Wonder of History July 2007
Museum collage blockHappy 4th of July!  It was nice seeing so many of you at our 67th annual Members' Meeting last month.  It was memorable on so many fronts--from the announcement of a very special $25,000 Capital Campaign gift to the poignant remarks of our keynote speaker, Joe Foster.

The summer season is now upon us, and whether your houseguests are world leaders or simply your grandkids,  we hope you'll include the Museum in your summer plans. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Sincerely,
The Brick Store Museum
Baseball Exhibit Opens this Sunday, July 8
(special hours for Opening Day!)
Kennebunk's Big Leaguers

Summer is here, and what says "summer" better than baseball?

We're anticipating a home run with Kennebunk's Big Leaguers, our newest exhibition, to open this Sunday, July 8 with special hours from noon to 4 PM.  Come on by for an "OPENING DAY" reception with popcorn, peanuts, cracker jack and lemonade...all your summer favorites!

Kennebunk's Big Leaguers showcases the two major league baseball players who have called Kennebunk home: "Colby Jack" Coombs (1882-1957) and his nephew Bobby Coombs (1908-1991). Kennebunk's Big Leaguers brings these players to life through rare images, newspaper clippings, video reminiscences, vintage baseball memorabilia, and never-before-seen personal ephemera. Visitors experience the exhibition by literally "rounding the bases" to learn about these men as Kennebunkers, college players, big leaguers, and also as coaches with university baseball stadiums named for each of them.

Exhibition made possible by the special athletic abilities of two Kennebunkers, with additional support from our proud Business Partner: Captain Lord Mansion.
Register Now for History Camp: Going "Wild"

History Camp Goes "Wild"We still have few spots remaining for this year's History Camp on Saturday, July 14 for kids ages 8 to 12, but registration is due by July 7, so act soon!

Our 4th annual History Camp complements our current Wild Things exhibition of folk art animals. Inspired by the nearly 100 carved pieces in the exhibition, kids can try their hands at painting articulated toy snakes and fish in the folk art tradition. They'll also learn to identify the tracks made by Maine wildlife and create a casting of an animal print as a keepsake. Finally, they'll let their imaginations run wild in crafting a "stuffed fish." All projects will be displayed at the end of the day for everyone to enjoy. Best of all, kids get to take home everything they made as mementos of the day!

Author to Speak about Eminent Mainers on July 25

The popular Views from Within lecture series continues on Wednesday, July 25th at 7PM at the Nonantum Resort located at 95 Ocean Avenue, Kennebunkport! Join us for the second in this year's series of three programs to be presented by the Kennebunkport Historical Society and The Brick Store Museum.

Our guest speaker for the evening is Arthur Douglas Stover, author of the recently-released book through Tilbury House Publishing, Eminent Mainers: Succinct Biographies of Thousands of Amazing Mainers, Mostly Dead, and a Few People from Away Who Have Done Something Useful Within the State of Maine. He'll regale us with anecdotes of "Eminent Mainers" (note: Kennebunkers well-represented!), who accomplishments range from being the first person to photograph the spectrum of starlight to the one who invented earmuffs.

The lecture is free, with donations gratefully accepted. Copies of Eminent Mainers will be on sale for $20 apiece (plus tax) for the book signing to follow the lecture. This is one publication that's great on the coffee table or as a resource for impressing your friends over cocktails on your knowledge of Maine history!

The Nonantum's dining room opens at 5:30PM for those wishing to have dinner prior to the evening program.
Your Vote Counted: $2,070 Gift Received from Kennebunk Savings Bank

Kennebunk Savings Bank president and CEO Ken Reed presents check to Brick Store Museum representatives. Thanks to all who voted for the Museum this spring on Kennebunk Savings Bank's Community Investment ballot, we were recently awarded a check for $2,070!  We were thrilled when bank President and CEO Ken Reed (pictured at left), came by to present the check in person to Museum treasurer David Moravick and executive director Tracy Baetz.

The bank's innovative policy is to give 10% of its annual earnings to York County charities and non-profits. Since 1995, one vehicle for this has been the Community Investment Ballot program, through which bank customers are invited to vote for the charity of their choice. This  year, over 5,000 customers responded in allocating well over $120,000.  The Museum received 90 votes and was one of only 20 area non-profits to receive an unsolicited grant of over $1,000.  Thank you!
