Hello! Well, we made it. The Museum officially turned 70 years old on July 1st, and the Town of Kennebunk officially proclaimed the date Brick Store Museum Day. We really appreciated everyone who joined in to help us celebrate...including one local woman who had also been in attendance at our opening day back in 1936! There's still time to sign the giant birthday card with your personal greetings for the Museum--so stop by to see us! In addition, thanks to all who voted for the Museum on the 2006 Kennebunk Savings Bank Community Investment Ballot, we were presented with a check for $1,984.00 on our 70th birthday. This gift has an immediate and meaningful impact on our operations, and we're grateful for your support. Read on for more special things coming your way at the Museum.... We hope you're enjoying the summer. ![]() Sincerely, The Brick Store Museum
Do You Remember the Kennebunks When...? If you have fond reminiscences of the drive-in and Weinstein's or hung out at Jones' Diner or spent the summer at the Dipsy Baths, worked at the Atlantis, or cruised through Dock Square...then this evening is for you! Join us at The Nonantum Resort at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 19th. Steve Adams and Tom Bradbury share vintage images and invite audience participation in recalling memories about area landmarks. This represents the second in a series of free programs to be presented by the Kennebunkport Historical Society and The Brick Store Museum in 2006 and made possible by a grant from the Corning Incorporated Foundation.
A "reel" treat! As part of programming for our ongoing Camp Maine: Rustic Furniture & Accessories, 1860-1940 exhibition, award- winning fly tyer and registered Maine guide Selene Dumaine will demonstrate fly tying at the Museum on Saturday, July 22nd from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. This special program is open to the public at no charge. Drop by, watch, and ask questions as Dumaine creates her signature patterns without the aid of a vise! She'll also provide insight into the art and history of fly tying in the Rangeley region, showcasing a few items from her personal collection, including an original "Gray Ghost" tied by the legendary Carrie Stevens and a tea caddy belonging to the famous Fly Rod Crosby! Dumaine is dedicated to practicing traditional methods of fly tying, as well as originating new patterns to closely replicate the naturals found in her home waters of Maine. She'll even have on hand samples of her rods and flies for sale as custom orders. Selene Dumaine is the sole proprietor of Brook Song Angling in Readfield, Maine. She won the North East Fly Tying Competition judged by Lefty Kreh and Dave Whitlock at the World Fly Fishing Expo in 1998. In 2003, Fly Tyer Magazine dubbed her "A Modern Carrie Stevens" for her reproduction flies tied in the Rangeley Style. She teaches fly tying courses and has been a registered Maine guide since 1998, specializing in the fields of Fly Fishing and Recreation.
In honor of the Museum's 70th anniversary this all- new exhibition, A Legacy of Lords, looks back on generations of Kennebunk's Lord family and their roles in creating the museum you enjoy today. Find out what used to be in our four Main Street buildings over the course of nearly 200 years, how come we're called the "Brick Store" Museum, and why we have Edith Barry to thank!
We're extending a special thank-you to Bill Gallant and Mail -It Unlimited in Shoppers Village on Rt. 1, Kennebunk. For the month of July, Mail-It Unlimited is featuring us on its in-store donation box, with all proceeds collected benefiting the Museum. We encourage you to stop by Mail-It Unlimited for your gift shopping and shipping needs...and do look for the donation box!
To tie in with our Camp Maine: Rustic Furniture & Accessories, 1860-1940 exhibition, the Museum is literally going to the dogs! In the spirit of all the classic hunting and sporting dogs associated with traditional Maine camps, we're turning the spotlight on dog adoption. On Saturday, August 19th, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Museum's courtyard, we're proud to be partnering with the Animal Welfare Society of West Kennebunk for this worthy cause. Come! And you might just discover your new best friend. Your own four-footed pals are also welcome. As a special addition to the day, we'll be offering souvenir "family" photos shot digitally with a vintage Maine camp scene as a backdrop. Photo proceeds benefit the Museum; dog treats provided! This event is being generously sponsored by Kennebunk Veterinary Hospital.
