Welcome to 2009 and what we hope will be an auspicious new year for the museum. Like so many institutions, the Museum in 2008 was not immune to the effects of high fuel costs and the global economic downturn. And yet there were still many high points for which we were thankful and that nonetheless made 2008 very much a year to remember. Here are just a few:
- Combined visitation & outreach totals increased 2.2% for a new five-year high (and were up 17.2% since 2004!)
- Visitors came from 47 states and 12 foreign countries
- More than 80 volunteers gave a combined total of over 3,480 hours of their time and expertise
- The Museum planned a total of nearly 40 special events, public programs, and exhibitions
- There were more than 160 appearances about museum activities run in 31 different media outlets
- Finding aids for more than 80 archival collections were added to the Museum's online offerings
- The Connecting Generations Capital Campaign concluded with $1.33 million raised for endowment and capital improvements
- The museum's redesigned website won 3rd place in the New England Museum Association design competition
- The Museum was honored as the 2008 Non-Profit Business of the Year by the Kennebunk-Kennebunkport Chamber of Commerce
Sincerely,
The Brick Store Museum |

Construction Zone!
Nothing says progress like all the work crews, trucks and equipment at the Museum these days.
After much planning and acquiring the requisite approvals and permits, we're off and running with our renovations, made possible by donors to the Museum's Connecting Generations Capital Campaign.
We're pleased to have DeStefano & Associates on board managing the construction efforts, from sills to rooftops (see blue sidebar at right). Much exterior work has already been accomplished with much on the interior yet to come, like dampproofing basements, fixing sills, and reinforcing framing. Thanks to some very creative thinking and phasing of the work, we'll be OPEN throughout the entire renovation process, though understandably, some portions of buildings will be off limits at various times. When it's all done later this spring, we'll have structurally sound buildings, dry basements, greater capacity for historical collections, and more! Come share in our excitement as we build a better future for preserving our past. |

Popular Kids' Workshop Returns
To coincide with the schools' winter vacation, kids in grades 4 through 8 are invited to spend Wednesday, February 18 at the Museum being "history sleuths" honing their investigative skills and using their powers of deduction. They'll sift through clues from historical records and artifacts in the Museum's collections to piece together the identity and background of an actual person from Kennebunk's past. Who will it be? Working in groups, the "detectives" will creatively reveal their findings-perhaps as a news broadcast, mini-documentary, or historical reenactment. Whatever format they choose, their presentations will be professionally videotaped and recorded to DVDs by local company Video Creations as keepsakes of the day. Pre-registration is required by February 11. Cost is $25 per child ($20 for Museum members); family discounts available.
Made possible by the Museum's Dorothy Fish Fund for Preserving Edith Barry's Legacy. |

Hot Stove League: Remembering Colby Jack Coombs, Kennebunk's Big Leaguer
"Hot Stove League" is a baseball term referring to the off-season, conjuring images of die-hard fans--anxious for spring training and a fresh season--gathering around a hot stove during the cold winter months speculating about their favorite teams and players.
Join us on Saturday, February 28 at 2PM in the Museum's Program Center (4 Dane St.) for our own "Hot Stove League." Author John Tierney will share his experiences in researching and writing his new book, Jack Coombs: A Life in Baseball about Kennebunk's fabled ballplayer and coach ( and the subject of the Museum's popular Kennebunk's Big Leaguers exhibition in 2007!). Tierney provides an overview of "Colby Jack's" illustrious career in the early days of major league baseball and focuses on key highlights and amazing records. Joined on stage by Coombs descendant and Kennebunk local, Nelson Wentworth, the program will include personal recollections before opening it up to the audience for questions and a discussion of whether Colby Jack should be included in the National Baseball Hall of Fame!
Program is offered at no charge. Book signing to follow, with Tierney's book on sale for $25 (Museum members receive a 10% discount).

Inside Spotlight
New Year Brings Renovations to Museum
by John DeStefano, Construction Manager,
DeStefano & Associates
Renovations are well underway at The Brick Store Museum. We are complete with site improvements, which consisted of assuring that rainwater would be transferred to a drywell instead of into the basements. The carpenter's shed attached to the back of the building that houses the Museum's archives was removed, and, for the moment, the vacated space will be left as a lawn area. During the past two months we have been evaluating the Museum's historic Main Street structures from top to bottom and planning for the necessary structural improvements. All four buildings require the following: READ MORE >> |
