The summer is winding down, but the great weather continues. Eke out the best this summer has to offer by visiting our In the Maine Stream exhibition.  Also, if you haven't been in lately, catch the last few weeks of our 100 Years at the Beach exhibition, before it closes on September 14th. A perfect opportunity comes this Friday and Saturday, September 3-4 as the museum is hosting Heartwood College of Art's "Paint the 'Bunk" artist event in our Program Center.  See you soon!

Sincerely,
The Brick Store Museum

"Kayak through History" on Sept. 12th

Kayaking through History iconWe're teaming up with Coastal Maine Kayak to offer a guided kayak excursion on Sunday, September 12th from noon to 4:30PM as a special tie-in with the Museum's newest exhibition, In the Maine Stream. Coastal Maine Kayak is serving as the official outfitter for the afternoon's "Kayak through History" tour, and museum staff will provide additional interpretive commentary encompassing topics ranging from 19th-century ship building in the Kennebunks to the canoe races of the early 1900s. Participants will experience the Kennebunk River from the unique perspective of paddling kayaks past such historical points of interest as the former Clark Shipyard, the old locks, Cape Arundel Golf Club, Picnic Rocks, Durrell's Bridge and the Landing.

Advance reservations are required by contacting the Museum directly at 207-985-4802. The cost of $80 per person is inclusive of all gear; due to liability policies, no personal equipment may be used.

Rain date:  Sunday, Sept. 19th, 9AM-1:30PM
Kudos to our Summer Interns

2010 College InternsWe were fortunate to have the perspective, assistance, and energy of three college interns this summer. Pictured at right, they were (from top)  Erin DesMeules, Sarah Drake, and Abby Ettelman. While each held additional jobs outside the museum, they collectively volunteered for more than 117 hours.

Erin is a history major, going into her junior year at SUNY-Buffalo. She was a natural when it came to installing the In the Maine Stream exhibition, and she also created online inventories for the museum's map and folio collections.

Sarah, a student at the University of Aberdeen and the University of Maine-Orono, assisted our registrar and archivist with several projects and was a big help on the day of our History Camp for kids.

If you called the museum this summer, chances are that the cheery, helpful person on the other end of the line was Abby, a junior at the University of British Columbia. She accomplished various tasks throughout the museum but most frequently assisted us with visitor services and mailings. She's hoping the experiences will serve her well back at school, where she is pursuing a work-study position at her campus museum of anthropology.

We wish these young women the very best in their academic pursuits and look forward to having them return to the Brick Store Museum!

Guide by Cell

...that it's okay to turn ON your cell phones at the Brick Store Museum?  That's right: we now have a cell-phone-based audio tour! By dialing into the Museum's designated tour number with your phone, you can access all sorts of additional information. The tour won't cost you anything extra beyond your admission to the museum but will use minutes on your phone plan.

The first 10 tours stops developed this summer were done by kids for kids and comprise an all-new Kids' Tour of the museum's highlights--from a diorama to portraits, and even a piece from a local shipwreck!  A group of 3rd through 6th graders researched the artifacts, wrote their scripts, and recorded the stops in their own words. Click on the image below to listen to a sample Kids' Tour stop about artist John Brewster, Jr.'s 19th-century portrait of Elizabeth Wallingford. This one was developed by Margaret, a Kennebunk third-grader:

Come on in to take the full Kids' Tour! For adults, we've added regular audio guide stops to our In the Maine Stream exhibition, and in the coming weeks we will also be recording stops so that you'll be able to take your cell phone on a self-guided tour of Kennebunk's historic district!
Start-up funding for our tour technology was generously provided through grants from the Elmina B. Sewall Foundation and Virginia Hodgkins Somers Foundation.

Betty Lyman attending the Museum's "White Glove Lecture Series" in 2006

IN MEMORIAM
Betty R. Lyman

The Brick Store Museum is saddened by the recent loss of Betty Lyman in July 2010.  Betty was a valued member of the museum's Board of Trustees from 1983 through 1998. She served as both Treasurer and Vice President and helped to guide the museum through its first-ever capital campaign in the mid 1990s. Betty was named an honorary trustee in 1998 and remained a steadfast friend of the museum and regular participant at events. Her enthusiasm for the Brick Store Museum will be long remembered and deeply missed.
