Hard to believe we're fast closing in on the end of summer already, but do come by and see what we're up to these days. Read on to learn how you can "Jig Your Way Into Labor Day" and much more.  We've got lots of great programming planned to carry us into fall, too!

Come on a Shipbuilding Odyssey!
The Ship Reuce, Brick Store Museum Collection, I.67

Ever heard about all those ships built on the Kennebunk River in the 1800s but just couldn't fathom it all? Wonder no longer: Saturday, August 29 at 1PM is your chance to delve deeper!

In a Brick Store Museum exclusive, learn about the Kennebunks' storied shipbuilding past. This 3-hour heritage tour begins at the Museum with a brief, illustrated talk about what life was like in the Kennebunks' many shipyards and what it took to build the vessels that eventually sailed trade routes spanning the globe. You'll then embark on a special, narrated trolley excursion that takes you to various local sites associated with shipbuilding along the Kennebunk River in the 1800s. The afternoon winds up back at the Museum for refreshments, viewing related collections, and receiving a commemorative gift. Advance reservations are required as space is limited for this signature event! To register, stop by or call the Museum at 207.985.4802; cost is $30/person ($25 for current Museum members).

Museum Scene Included in Rockwell Event

March 2, 1946 Saturday Evening Post Cover, "Picture Hanger"From August 14th through 16th, the Kennebunks are embracing nostalgia and saluting beloved American artist Norman Rockwell with the Second Annual Norman Rockwell Festival, presented by The Art of the Play. The festival is at the Kennebunk Town Hall and includes an art and photography exhibition, the hilarious film The Norman Rockwell Code, Saturday evening plays based upon the themes expressed in Rockwell's  Saturday Evening Post covers, and even a Sunday "Thanksgiving Dinner."

Maine photographers and artists were invited to re-create Rockwell's famous Saturday Evening Post images for the exhibition portion of the festival: "Finding Norman Rockwell's Small Town America." Many local residents and entertainment personalities posed for the photos and illustrations...including the Brick Store Museum's own executive director, Tracy Baetz!  See if you can spot her:  she's in the museum scene as the "Picture Hanger," recreated from the March 2, 1946, issue of the Saturday Evening Post. The exhibition portion of the festival is free and open to public at Town Hall on Friday, August 14,  4-7PM and Saturday, August 15, 10AM-4PM. Click here for the full schedule of events.

Local Artist Produces Poster to Benefit Museum
Cupolas of the Kennebunks poster by Todd Wallis

Local Kennebunk artist Todd Wallis has created a beautiful new poster featuring a captivating array of cupolas throughout the Kennebunks.  Produced in cooperation with the Museum, the 16" x 20" full color poster is being offered for $29 both at the Museum and at the Kennebunk Book Port in Shoppers Village on Rt. 1.  Many of the cupolas pictured are in Kennebunk's National Register Historic District, which will be the subject of a new exhibition at the Museum later this year.  A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the poster will benefit the Museum.

Wallis is best known for his strikingly detailed and expressive animal portraits. A product of the Museum School of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Wallis has won juried awards in painting, drawing and photography. His love of nature is reflected in landscapes and seascapes in watercolor, acrylic, graphite, and pen & ink. Commissioned work includes portraits of people and pets, as well as architectural renderings. His art is enjoyed by clients through the country.
The Brick Store Museum is located at 117 Main Street in the heart of Kennebunk's National Register Historic District. For more than 70 years, the Museum has been dedicated to preserving the Kennebunks' rich cultural and artistic heritage. Its galleries and research archives are open year-round (closed holidays), Tuesdays-Fridays, 10-4:30 and Saturdays, 10-1. Admission is by donation; suggested $5/person. More Than a
Summer Vacation
by Cynthia Walker,
graduate student and Dorothy Fish Intern for Edith Barry Studies

Intern Cynthia Walker and museum benefactor Dorothy Fish

The words "summer vacation" inspire images such as the beach, ice cream, and heat waves. As for my summer vacation, I might say that I skipped the summer experience and went right for the postcards. As an intern at the Brick Store Museum starting in June 2009, I spent my days learning far more about the Museum's founder, Edith C. Barry, than I ever imagined and also creating two exhibitions for the Museum.

Joining the staff at the Brick Store Museum for the summer was something I wanted to be a part of even before I started.   Read more>>

Fire fighting memorabilia in the Museum's collections

...that in September,  Kennebunk Fire Rescue will be hosting the 46th Maine State Federation of Firefighters' Convention? As part of the proceedings there's going to be a big parade on Saturday, September 12 at 10AM featuring marching units, fire trucks, drill units, color guards, and historical fire apparatus from around the state.  The parade route winds throughout downtown Kennebunk before ending in West Kennebunk. The Museum is currently working with Kennebunk Fire Rescue to temporarily loan for display as part of the festivities the historic Washington Hose Company reel and the c. 1893 Thomas B. Reed Hook and Ladder Wagon (used for half a century in West Kennebunk)!
