Brick Store Museum Happenings

Exploring the Wonders of History April 2010
Museum collage
Well, with so much going on for you to read about, we'll keep this intro really brief.  One quick reminder, though: if you're a Kennebunk Savings customer, don't forget to cast your vote for the Brick Store Museum on the bank's 2010 Customer Ballot prior to the April 30th deadline. Each vote equates to approximately $20 in valuable grant money...it all adds up.  Thank you!

Sincerely,
The Brick Store Museum, (207) 985-4802

May Baskets at the Museum

May Day 2010 Saturday, May 1st marks downtown Kennebunk's 12th Annual May Day Festival, complete with a 1:30PM parade on Main Street. While tons of family-friendly festivities are going on at various venues throughout the day, the Museum is once again pleased to offer a make-your-own May basket activity station especially for kids, from 10AM to 1PM. It's also the last day to catch our Pennies to Ride trolley exhibition...youngsters can even pick up a cut-and-assemble paper trolley to take home.

Art Conservator To Answer Your Questions

Spring Cleaning: Don't Forget Your Paintings! Paintings conservator Neil H. Crandall, a restorer of fine art since 1976, will be on hand to present a fascinating, practical lecture and Q&A session on Wednesday, May 12th at 7PM in the Museum's Program Center at 4 Dane Street.

In Spring Cleaning: Don't Forget Your Paintings, Crandall will answer all those questions you've always wanted to know--but were scared to ask--about caring for your works of art: Where is the best place to hang a painting? Should I clean it? How do I know when to consult a conservator?

Admission is free. Attendees are encouraged to bring along an older artwork of concern (only pieces that can be safely transported, please!) to share with the audience as part of the evening's discussion.

Made possible by a grant from the Virginia Hodgkins Somers Foundation.

New Exhibition Coming in May
For Pastels Only
The Museum is eagerly anticipating hosting For Pastels Only from May 22nd through June 12th.  Organized by The Pastel Painters of Maine (PPOM), this 11th international show features a juried selection of 62 stunning works submitted by 53 artists representing 13 states and Canada. Bill Creevy, PSA Master Pastelist and author of The Pastel Book, will judge the entries and award the prizes. Creevy's articles and reviews appear in American Artist, Pastel Journal, Art in America and Artist's magazine; and he is the recipient of numerous national honors. PPOM was established in 1999 by a group of southern Maine artists with the mission of promoting soft pastels, uniting local and regional artists, and heightening public awareness of this artistic medium. Today its international membership is over 170 strong.

Let's face it. Whether it's baseball cards, artwork, stamps, or sea glass, chances are that you collect something. As a nod to the collector in YOU, in this spot we'll be offering the occasional tip on caring for the things you find special.

This month?  Quilts.  Admittedly, the best way to store an heirloom quilt is to spread it out flat with a breathable cotton sheet on top to keep the dust off. But if you don't have a spare bed handy, the next best thing is to roll it (repeated folding can damage a quilt over time), wrap it in a cotton sheet, and keep it in a dry place away from direct sunlight and extremes in temperature.

Look for more quilt care tips on the takeaway handout in our Quilts from the Collections exhibition, on view through May 4, 2010.
